LCPS Seeks Input on School Renaming
In considering whether some school names reflect LCPS values of inclusion and diversity, the Loudoun County School Board is considering changing some school names and is seeking public comment. Committees have been appointed to review the first two school names being considered: Frances Hazel Reid Elementary School and Mercer Middle School.
The next step, per policy, is to survey the community. Additional information on the school name review, including School Board Policy 6510, Naming School Facilities, is available on the LCPS School Names webpage.
You may complete the survey as a community member, parent/guardian, staff or student. Choose the role that best represents you. Please visit lcps.org/thoughtexchange to take the survey by Monday, Dec. 16.

Help Provide Students with Weekend Meals
As you gather with friends and family this holiday season, consider helping our neighbors in need. The Loudoun Education Foundation’s Fueled program serves approximately 2,000 LCPS students each week through meal bags and in-school pantries. We are seeing a record level of requests for help from families in need. Just a $25 donation to LEF covers the cost of 10 student meal bags. Give at LoudounEducationFoundation.org/donate.

Dual Language Immersion Parent Information Nights
LCPS will host Parent Information Nights for the Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program at various locations across the county in December and January. The DLI program gives native English and Spanish-speaking students the chance to develop strong skills in both languages while achieving academic success. Students learn to read, write and communicate effectively in English and Spanish, while their primary language continues to grow. The program helps students become bilingual, biliterate and culturally competent. Parents and guardians with incoming kindergarteners and/or rising first-grade families interested in the DLI program should attend one of the upcoming in-person meetings. For dates, times and locations, visit www.lcps.org/DLI or see these flyers: Information Night Flyer (English) or Information Night Flyer (Spanish).
Indicator 8 Survey Helps VDOE Identify Special Education Process Training Needs
Parents of students receiving special education services are reminded to complete the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) 2022-2023 Indicator 8 Parent Involvement Survey by Friday, Dec. 13. Each year the VDOE is required to report to the U.S. Department of Education the percentage of parents with a child receiving special education services “who report that schools facilitated parent involvement as a means of improving services and results for children with disabilities.” Your participation in this survey will help VDOE collect additional information to identify training needs related to the special education processes. Families with more than one child receiving special education services are requested to complete a survey for each of their children.

National Computer Science Week Highlights the Importance of Technology
National Computer Science Education Week highlights the importance of computer science and technology in education for students in grades K-8. From exploring artificial intelligence to discovering career pathways that utilize technology, National Computer Science Education Week encourages curiosity and innovation. The Loudoun County School Board officially approved a proclamation recognizing Dec. 9-15, 2024, as Computer Science Education Week in LCPS.
Families are encouraged to explore activities together at home to complement classroom learning. The Computer Science Lesson repository is a valuable resource for engaging hands-on projects to help spark students’ curiosity about the possibilities in the technology field. These lessons are a sampling of activities that can be completed at home:
- Face Sensing with Scratch Lab (kindergarten - grade 2): Students can explore facial expression sensing in Scratch, using a camera to control animations and responses.
- Neural Networks for Kids (grades 3-5): Parents/guardians can read or guide students through a simple explanation of neural networks, introducing them to AI concepts.
- Sassy Career Explorer (grades 6-8): Students can explore careers using Sassy, an AI-powered tool that helps students think about their future career options.
Families, parents and guardians are invited to share their child’s experiences and projects on social media using the hashtag #LCPSCSWeek and tagging @LCPSOfficial, @CSforLCPS and @LCPS_CTAE. Share photos, videos or reflections on what students have learned to celebrate their achievements and inspire others to explore computer science.

Reflect and Connect: Finding and Sharing Your Gift
This article is part of a series that seeks to support students and families as they reflect on their own experiences and the world around. This series also replicates the reflections and observations that students often participate in through their classes.
Winter offers a natural pause to reflect, recharge and reconnect as the year ends. It’s a time to consider the unique gifts you bring to the world and how sharing them creates warmth and light for yourself and others.
Each of us has something special to offer — whether it’s a bold talent like inspiring students or a quiet strength like listening with compassion. Your gift, no matter its form, is uniquely yours and doesn’t require perfection. It’s about recognizing what you have to offer and sharing it in your own way.
Sharing your gift doesn’t mean stepping into the spotlight. It’s about creating ripples of kindness. A kind word, teaching a skill, volunteering or offering encouragement can brighten someone’s day and bring a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
Resilience in Adversity
Winter often reminds us of life’s challenges, but it also highlights the resilience we carry within. Research shows that utilizing personal strengths helps us navigate tough times with courage and composure. Using our unique character strengths builds resilience and protects and helps us manage difficult emotions.
Sharing your gift, no matter how big or small, is a powerful way to cultivate this resilience. When you offer your talents or kindness to others, you strengthen connections, foster gratitude and create moments of joy that shine through the darker days.
Reflect on Your Gifts
Your gift could be a musical talent, a knack for solving problems, or an ability to make others laugh. Maybe it’s your determination, creativity, or how you bring people together. As the season unfolds, take a moment to reflect:
What might bring me joy when I do it?
What might others appreciate about me?
When might I feel most like myself?
Start Small, Shine Bright
Still trying to figure out where to start? Begin with something simple:
Use your skills to assist a friend, family member, classmate, or coworker with a task.
Spend time doing what you love and share it with others.
Reflect on ways to give back to your family, school or community.
The beauty of sharing your gift lies in its simplicity. It’s not about grand gestures but about showing up as your true self and letting your light shine in your way.
Reflection question: What gift will you share this winter?

Providing input via the Feedback Form does not guarantee that the feedback will be included in the final policy.
