A Word From Mrs. Loor
Dear Franklin Families,
We had a blast with author, Sylvia Chen. She read her book, Tricky Chopsticks and students got to challenge her in a chopsticks race. We learned that the style of chopsticks vary from country to country as well. Our students celebrated and/or learned about Lunar New Year in their classes. For those you who celebrate, I hope you have a prosperous and happy new year!
We also had our first "morning of play" on Friday. Students engaged in whole group, small group and individual games and activities. It gave our students a much needed break as well as a chance to interact with each other more on a social level. The PTO provided additional board games for our indoor recess bins, and it all came just in time for our morning of play. Thank you, PTO!
It's School Counseling Week! Where would we be without Ms. Audino? A big shoutout to Ms. Audino for everything she does as our school counselor. Please feel free to shower her with tokens of appreciation. Join in on the fun with our School Counseling Spirit Week. See the flyer below.
On Tuesday, the LCJSMS performing music groups will be visiting us on their annual tour. On Thursday, 5th Grade will have their Living Wax Museum exhibit. All classes will have the opportunity to visit. Please send your children in with quarters to bring our historical figures to "life." All donations will go to the Red Cross to help the victims of the California wildfires. 5th grade parents are invited to attend the museum at 2:15 PM.
Have an amazing week!
With Warmest Regards,
Mrs. Loor
Counselor's Corner
National School Counseling Week begins on Monday. Let's have some fun with a spirit week!
For any questions regarding our counseling program, please contact Ms. Audino, our school counselor. Her email is laudino@summit.k12.nj.us.
Smartwatches
As I have communicated in past Franklin 411 newsletters and stated in our parent handbook, teachers have the discretion to ask students to put their smartwatches away in their backpacks at the start of the day and then retrieve them at dismissal. Students have become increasingly distracted by their watches throughout the school day. Putting away their personal devices allows students to remain focused on their learning without the temptation of this additional piece of technology. It also allows the communication between home and school to remain with the adults.
Thank you.
Franklin Artists
Moving through these cold and snowy months, Franklin artists have been hard at work creating masterpieces. Check out this collaborative cardinal piece in the main entryway completed by 1MC and 2G, as well as some more of the individual projects that classes have been working on this winter!
Black History Month Spotlight
Katherine Johnson's extraordinary mathematical abilities led to one of her most known accomplishments at NASA where she helped to calculate the trajectory of the first human spaceflight for the United States. She overcame racial and gender barriers while she worked at Langley. She was the first woman in the Flight Research Division to receive credit as the author for a research report. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2015.
It saddens me to admit that I had never heard of her until I watched the movie, Hidden Figures. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it!

Passion Project Follow Up
Franklin Falcon, Katie Bachman, would like to thank the Franklin community for their support of her hurricane relief fundraiser. Katie researched hurricanes for her passion project as part of the IDEAS program and created a website to teach others about hurricanes. She then had a jewelry sale after school on Monday, January 27, 2025, to support hurricane relief efforts and raised $450 from the Franklin community. She donated these funds to a Black Mountain, NC elementary and primary school fundraiser focused on rebuilding, and to the North Carolina Community Foundation. You can visit her website to learn more about hurricanes!

FEBRUARY IS NATIONAL CHILDREN’S DENTAL MONTH
Tooth decay (or cavities) is the #1 chronic childhood disease in America and is largely preventable. Oral health problems in children may result in pain and discomfort, sleep and appetite issues, low self-esteem and reduced academic performance.
The Give Kids A Smile (GKAS) program provides children with free oral health care during the month of February. Each year approximately 6,500 dentists and 30,000 dental team members volunteer at local GKAS events to provide free oral health education, screenings, preventive and restorative treatment to over 300,000 children. Additional information and a list of participating dental offices is available online. Call now to make an appointment! Appointments fill up quickly.
The 2024 New Jersey Dental Clinic Directory also provides a central source of information on public dental clinics and services in New Jersey that provide services year round. These clinic services are primarily provided by local health departments, hospitals, and Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). A directory of clinics and providers is available online .
Some important notes regarding the NJ Dental Clinic directory: The dental clinics are listed by county. If you are unable to find a clinic in your county, check other nearby counties. Be sure to ask about the documents you need to bring to your appointment, as insurance and payment options vary by clinic and are subject to change. UNINSURED? You may qualify for free dental services at an FQHC. FQHCs listed in this directory are marked with an asterisk (*).
Never hesitate to contact your child’s school nurse for additional information!
If you have any medical questions or concerns never hesitate to reach out to our school nurse, Ann Zanelli. Her email is azanelli@summit.k12.nj.us. You can also visit the Summit Public Schools Virtual Health Office for additional information.
