LETTER FROM: PRESIDENT PARKER HAGLE
Hello, Parker Hagle here Michigan State President. The 2024-2025 state president's project is Restoring Hope. I am raising money to have a dog be rescued from a local Michigan shelter and be trained to be a service dog for a veteran who is in need of one, at VSDO (Veteran Service Dog Organization) there is no cost to the veteran. They help with PTSD, panic disorders, physical disabilities, seizures and many more.
On May 4th I had a very successful kick off meeting at the VSDO (Veteran Service Dog Organization) in Howell Michigan. During the Kick off we had a small meeting followed up by a tour of their facility and an explanation on services by the Executive Director Mr. Kirk Lanman and we had a silent auction.
Our next event is Tuesday June 18th in Lansing for the Capital Tour from our Government Studies Chair, Michael Wolven and Sr. Linda Brandis. I hope to see you there!
STATE PRESIDENT PARKER'S BROCHURE (UPDATED ON 2023.06.04)
THE BROCHURE HAS BEEN UPDATED AS OF JUNE 4, 2024. PLEASE DOWNLOAD THE CURRENT BROCHURE. THANK YOU!

LETTER FROM SR. PRESIDENT DEB RAKOCZY
Hello Everyone!
We had 66 members, seniors and friends join us at our 91st State Conference in Marquette on March 1st and 2nd! We were able to celebrate with Rodney as he raised over $9,000 for his project – “Battle on the Homefront Memorial”. The monument will be installed and dedicated at Great Lakes National Cemetery later this year. We installed new officers and Rodney was elected Honorary State President. Well done Rodney!
In April – Over 20 Michigan members, seniors and friends traveled to Arlington, Virginia for National Convention. Rodney made us Michigan Proud giving our state report! Well done Rodney! A Big Thank You to Mason for carrying the Michigan Flag in procession and during Rodney's report!! And another Big Thank You to our 2023 Great Lakes Regional Enthusiast Erin for carrying the North Dakota flag!! Jeremy did a great job reporting out on his National Handbook Committee.
Michigan had 7 delegates present to vote in the new National Officers. We visited Arlington National Cemetery to see the N.S.C.A.R. wreath laid at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We traveled to Mount Vernon to see our 2024 – 2025 State President, Parker Hagle, installed. It was a great convention!
Emerson Sites-Byers is our new National President. His National Theme is “Courage, Service, Honor” and we will learn more about it as the Regional Tour gets going.
Parker began our C.A.R year by presenting her State Project – “Restoring Hope” - on May 4th at the Kick-Off Meeting. We visited Veteran Service Dog Organization in Howell, MI to have our in person and Zoom Meeting. After the meeting we learned about the VSDO mission.
Our Government Studies Chairmen has been working with Representative Matt Maddock from Milford to secure a visit to our State Capitol, which is on June 18th! The details are in the Wolverine issue and has beeb eBlasted. Thank you Michael and Mrs. Brandis!
Registration should be available soon for the Great Lakes / Midsouthern Regional Meeting in Covington, KY on July 1st and 2nd. I will pass along the information as soon as I receive it.
NOTES for the June 1, 2024 Senior National Board of Management Meeting:
1 - C.A.R. Magazine and Newsletters Committee will be changed to C.A.R. Newsletters Committee. Rationale: The name change is to eliminate the confusion that members and seniors often have. The purpose of this committee is to help guide and judge the local and state societies on their newsletters. Often this committee gets submissions and articles that are magazine related. This would hopefully eliminate this confusion.
2 – The National Merit Award will now be a points based award. Each question will have a possible number of points that the society can receive. Please look for the 2024-2025 National Merit Award Form on the N.S.C.A.R. Web-site in a few weeks.
3 – The National Society will now offer an incentive on membership. Effective July 4, 2024 through October 19, 2031 – The application fee for each approved member will be refunded to the local society.
4 – A Logo Task Force and an Insignia & Ribbon Task Force have been created, The Logo Task Force will evaluate our current logo which is 20 years old. This does not mean it will change, but just an evaluation to see if it needs to be. The second part of this task force will establish a thumbnail image. Many organizations and businesses have thumbnail images that become synonymous and useful when identifying the entity. The committee will create an image for this body to vote on to create such an image and when the image can be used. The third part of this task force will be to update the branding guidelines and establish the Trademark to speak to when, where, and how our logos can be used. The current branding guidelines are silent on such matters, and Trademark can not be verified or located. Members or Seniors will often refer back to said guidelines, but there is not a clear direction at this point. This would hopefully eliminate this confusion.
The Insignia & Ribbon Task Force will explore the cost and feasibility of contracting with a new jeweler and/or manufacturer to provide direct sales to C.A.R. Members and seniors. Rationale: With Hamilton dissolving their direct purchase capabilities at the end of 2023, our members and seniors can no longer order insignia and ribbon at their convenience. Hamilton has made available for purchase their remaining inventory, but that inventory is incredibly limited and they are not willing to manufacture any more pins or ribbon without a contract with N.S.C.A.R. In addition, even with a contract, they would still only provide bulk-order opportunities. The Task Force will explore opportunities to contract with other jewelers/manufacturers who will provide direct sales to members, or if feasible, allow N.S.C.A.R. to operate its own Insignia and Ribbon department. This will also allow N.S.C.A.R. to explore the potential revenue stream of operating our own Insignia and Ribbon department, or to receive a percentage of sales from a new jeweler, which was not part of our contract with Hamilton.
There was quite a bit more information that came from the meeting that I will share later.
Thank You!

Attention local societies: There is a new Membership Incentive that you will definitely want to hear about! Effective 07/04/24 – 10/19/31, all new member application fees will be refunded directly to the corresponding local societies! The more new members you can get, the more money you will get to do fun activities all while supporting veterans, our military, and historic preservation. So, let’s go get some new members!
By: Joey Podsiadlik, Membership Committee
Membership Objectives
Program: Encourage membership by highlighting the benefits, opportunities, and fun had by C.A.R. members.
Ideas for possible activities:
1. Create unforgettable reminders of the importance of growing membership through “membership moments” at meetings. For example, handing out sweet treats like “M&M’s – Membership & Members”
2. Design displays and pamphlets about N.S.C.A.R. to hand out at community hotspots such as Libraries, Children Museums, etc.
3. Host “pop-up” events and distribute information about C.A.R. via brochures, water bottles with C.A.R. website attached, etc.
- Experiential learning activities at local fairs, festivals, or parks such as making mini crafts, colonial games, etc.
- Organize “Red, White, Blue Flag Football”, 5K’s, parades, etc.
4. Excite other patriotic and parent organizations by sharing the joys and importance of C.A.R. membership through sing-alongs, skits, and other presentations
5. Call upon members to create media and virtual content to share how much fun C.A.R. is
6. Encourage member engagement through attendance raffles and buddy systems
7. Plan fun activities and trips, outside of meetings, with your local society to festivals, amusements parks, or other fun places
8. Maintain contact with prospective members that come to meetings/events to keep them engaged

This year I was lucky enough to go to Washington D.C. twice. I was able to go for the national conference and then was able to go with my school a month later. we were able to go to gettysburg. learning about the history of what happened on those grounds was so neat. I got to see the memorial for the 3rd Michigan Infantry, it was dedicated in 1889 for the veterans that fought in gettysburg. We also got to go to the Holocaust museum, the smithsonians, flight 93 memorial, and the state Capitol building. It was such a neat trip that I could talk about it alot. I like how they keep the national heritage alive so that people can learn about it.

American History Committee Chair, Morgan Hughes
Hi! My name is Morgan Hughes and I am your State Chair of American History!
I recently spent 4 days in Washington D.C. on my 8th grade trip and learned soooo
much about American History! Here is a photo of my best friend and me in front of
the Lincoln Memorial.
I also spent time at the Vietnam Memorial looking up soldiers on the Wall from Dearborn
where I live. It was a very moving experience.
I encourage all of you to learn about American History in any way you can.
I will be headed to the great city of Chicago this summer for our Churches' Youth mission trip.
I am excited to learn there too.
Have a great summer and learn!

C.A.R. Day of Service - Macie Hagle
Macie Hagle here, your Founders Day Chairperson, to remind you that our annual C.A.R Day of Service. I asked all C.A.R members, seniors, and supporters to complete service activities in your community around April 5th, in honor of the founding of the national society C.A.R. on April 5th 1895.
Can’t think of ways to help? Here’s some ideas:
Clean up trash at your local park/waterway
Volunteer at a food pantry/donate food
Volunteer at a homeless shelter/VFW
Clean up/pull weeds at your local cemetery
Volunteer at your local library
Volunteer at your local animal shelter
Show your community what C.A.R. can do and what it was created for.
* THERE IS NO CONTEST FOR THIS PROGRAM *
Everyone is encouraged to be in their community through volunteering for the sake of making the community better, which in itself is the reward! Remember to have fun and enjoy these activities, don’t forget to turn in your community service hours to the national website nscar.org!
Be sure to send your C.A.R. Day of Service articles and photos to Mrs. Royse for the next Wolverine.
Conservation Committee Chair, Molly Hughes
Hello, my name is Molly Hughes and I am your State Chair for Conservation!
I love nature, being outside and exploring. Here is a photo of me canoeing
at Howell Nature center on my 5th grade class trip!
I am standing here in a photo with my Principal Mrs. Peterson. Today was my
5th grade promotion and I was given the Americanism Award, I was surprised!
Try to remember to "CONSERVE". Try to cut down on buying plastic things,
containers and toys. I know it is hard, but plastic is everywhere, and we use
too much of it.
I challenge you to collect all the small plastic items that you would normally
recycle and save them to make something cool with! See the photo here! There is
so much to collect and so many colors! I will hand out more information at our
packet meeting in Gaylord. See you then!
Fort Dearborn Society.

Joey Podsiadlik, age 12, Elias Cady Society Treasurer
On March 1st, I attended the MSCAR State Conference in Marquette, MI. Marquette is far from where I live, because it is in the Upper Peninsula. This was only my second time going to the U.P., and my first time in Marquette. It is a beautiful and peaceful place. This was my second state conference and was a lot of fun.
My favorite part was swimming in the hotel pool and meeting new people, like Michael, Presley, and Trent from the Lexington Alarm Society. Another exciting part was getting sworn in to be the State Recording Secretary for the upcoming year.
The local news station even came to our banquet and talked about the conference on the news! It was a fun time celebrating the accomplishments of our State President, Rodney.
We also welcomed our incoming State President, Parker. Elias Cady Society is well represented on the state board with me as Recording Secretary, Macie H. as Chaplain, and Parker H. as incoming State President (Parker was installed at Mount Vernon Virginia).
Day of Service at Holly's Oakhill Cemetery
Elias Cady Society held a first meeting by our new President, Macie Hagle at the oakhill cemetery in Holly. We had fun while cleaning up the area around where Elias Cady, the Revolutionary War Veteran is buried and his family members too.
First time attendees at National Convention!
Macie and Parker Hagle attended the National Convention as first time attendees. Elias Cady Society received the Red Merit Award and Macie and Parker got their picture taken too. Elias Cady Society also won 4th place for Veterans and Public Relations! This was so amazing to all of us!
Parker and Macie also went to Mount Vernon with family and had their picture taken with their parents, Aunt and Uncle, and Grandparents too! Sr. President with all the C.A.R. members from Michigan Society.
Linda Sr. President of Elias Cady Society and veteran Rick Royse attended the national convention to support Michigan Society and Elias Cady Society.

In April my family and I went to National convention in Washington D.C. It was very neat to be able to take my younger sister, Addison to see the White House, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and national convention for the first time. I also was a flag bearer for the state of Michigan. It was very neat to hear from all the states on how their projects went for the year. I hope this year is just as successful if not more for the new year. Congratulations everyone on all your accomplishments.

From Jane Turnbull!
As of now, there is no new C.A. R. John Paul Jones President. We are working on it and should have a new one soon.
The Louisa St. Clair Chapter hosted a booth at the Airshow at Selfridge Airbase on June 8,2024. Helping in the booth was John Paul Jones C. A. R. member, Abigail Turnbull. Also C. A. R. John Paul Jones Senior President, Jane Turnbull. The booth was a great success with many people stopping by to receive a DAR wristlet, which Abby was handing out, along with other DAR information.

KI-KA-MA-SUNG SOCIETY
Multiple events to honor veterans by laying wreaths, and service project to clean up the cemetery too.
KKMS has been busy!
On Saturday, May 26, Ki-Ka-Ma-Sung participated in the wreath-laying for Revolutionary War Patriots Zoeth Tobey today, followed by a service project of cleaning headstones. What a great way to head into the Memorial Day weekend!
Zoeth Tobey, a patriot who was wounded during the American Revolution, is buried in Lawler Cemetery - a private cemetery now completely surrounded by Fort Custer Military Base (and so not accessible without prior approval from the Base Commander).
Today’s ceremony also paid tribute to the veterans of the Civil War and the War of 1812 whose final resting place is in Lawler Cemetery.
The first burial in Lawler Cemetery dates to 1733, making this one of the oldest cemeteries in Michigan. It is bordered by Territorial Road which was a trail travelled by Native Americans, then used by pioneers traveling westward to Michigan, and eventually became a segment of the stagecoach route between St Louis and Detroit.
Following the ceremony we engaged in a service project, cleaning the headstones of all the veterans buried in Lawler Cemetery, their loved ones, and as many other markers as we could tackle. (Two photos)
On Sunday, June 2, Ki-Ka-Ma-Sung joined with the Captain Samuel Felt Chapter celebrating the grave-marking of Revolutionary War Soldier and Sailor Ezra Chilson and of his wife Pamelia Daggett Chilson and the Rebecca Dewey Chapter who dedicated a new tombstone for Pamelia as she would be celebrating her 250th birthday on June 3. In the ceremony at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles, KKMS placed a wreath! (One Photo)

LEXINGTON ALARM SOCIETY, Day of Service
Lexington Alarm Society Day of Service
by Claire (13) and Andrew (7) Kostun
Lexington Alarm Society held a Day of Service on April 27th. Members and Seniors donated things or money to make 12 "Best Day Boxes." The boxes are filled with all the things needed to have the best birthday! There was cake mix, frosting, and a can of Sprite. You use the Sprite instead of oil and eggs to make the cake! There was also a birthday banner, birthday card, and candles. Everything went into an aluminum cake pan, which can be used to bake the cake!
When we were done filling the boxes, we tied ribbons around them and then dropped them off at the Plymouth Community Foster Closet, so that children in foster care can have a great birthday!
