Message from the Superintendent
Dear RSU 57 Community,
As your Superintendent of Schools, I am thrilled to welcome you to the 2024-2025 school year. I hope you enjoyed a restful and rejuvenating summer with friends and family. As we begin this new academic year, I am excited about the opportunities for learning, growth, and building meaningful connections within our school community.
Throughout the summer, our RSU 57 staff has been hard at work preparing for the upcoming school year. Our administrative team has diligently recruited exceptional new staff members to fill critical positions, ensuring we are fully equipped to meet our students' needs. We are confident that these talented professionals will greatly enhance our educational programs in the coming year.
Our teaching staff has also engaged in meaningful professional development focused on promoting and supporting students' social-emotional well-being. We recognize the importance of this work in creating a nurturing environment where every student can thrive.
Meanwhile, our Custodial, Maintenance, and Grounds crews have tirelessly ensured our facilities are in excellent condition and ready to welcome students back. Their dedication has resulted in safe, clean, and welcoming learning environments across our district.
Additionally, our Nutrition Department successfully distributed hundreds of meals through our Summer Meals Program, ensuring that our students had access to nutritious food even when school was not in session.
On Monday, August 26, we had the privilege of welcoming over 600 staff members to Massabesic Middle School for our annual Opening Day Event. Joined by several local government representatives, we celebrated our new staff members and recognized those who have served RSU 57 for many years. We were inspired by a presentation from Kye Henson of Orange Frog, who shared the power of positivity and helped us set a hopeful tone for the year ahead. His message was a powerful reminder of the importance of fostering a positive environment for both students and staff.
I also encourage all students and families to attend our annual open houses taking place over the next few days. Open houses are an excellent opportunity to build strong partnerships between home and school, and we hope you will join us. Our staff is looking forward to meeting you! The open house schedule is listed below.
Our staff is eager to welcome 2,900 students back to RSU 57 on the first days of school. Students in Grades 1-9, as well as those enrolled in SRTC, begin on Tuesday, September 3. Students in PreK, Kindergarten, and Grades 10-12 will begin on Wednesday, September 4. We look forward to starting a year that is sure to be filled with academic achievement and personal growth.
As we embark on this new school year, we are committed to working together with families and the greater community to prepare our students for success in an ever-changing world. Your partnership is essential, and we look forward to the successes and milestones that lie ahead.
Thank you for your continued support of RSU 57.
Sincerely,
Stephen D. Marquis, PhD.
Student Supports
Dear Families of RSU 57,
I hope this letter finds you well and settling into new school routines. As we begin the year, I wanted to share some important updates about our ongoing efforts to support our students' mental health and well-being. Our team has been working diligently to evaluate, enhance, and expand our existing student support systems through professional development, training, and ensuring we leverage effective tools to support this goal. We believe that by investing in these areas, we can create a more nurturing and responsive environment for all of our students. Additionally, a top priority for us is continuing to promote an awareness of ways for students to communicate a need for assistance or resources with our staff. Here are some other key initiatives that support this work:
Comprehensive District-Wide Supports: This summer our administrative team, School Counselors, Social Workers, and other district staff were trained in a wide variety of research-based practices to support students’ emotional health and well-being. We continue to evaluate our protocols and practices to improve upon our approach to student well-being across all grade levels, to ensure we are providing consistent and effective supports and interventions for students district-wide.
Enhanced Monitoring of RSU 57 Student Devices and Accounts: Throughout the summer, we have piloted an innovative enhanced feature on our current GoGuardian system, Beacon, to help us identify and respond to concerning online content within our scope, and are fully implementing this program as we return to school. Our hope is that this tool will provide us with greater opportunities to identify students who may be experiencing difficulty, increasing our ability to intervene as quickly as possible when presented with concerning online behavior.
NAMI's Sources of Strength Program: We're excited to introduce this peer-support program at MHS. This program is used in thousands of schools nationwide, with many in Maine too. It empowers students to help one another and build resilience within our school community.
We remain deeply committed to the mental health and overall well-being of our students. We understand that academic success is intrinsically linked to emotional and social wellness, and we're dedicated to nurturing all aspects of student growth. As we move forward, your partnership in this work is invaluable, and we welcome your questions and feedback on these efforts. Together, we can create a supportive community where every student can thrive.
Should you have questions about these supports, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s building principal. We look forward to working alongside you in the coming year to ensure the best possible environment for our students to learn, grow, and succeed.
Sincerely,
Stephen D. Marquis, PhD.

MHS Career Fair
Calling All Businesses, Industries & Community Partners!
Massabesic High School is hosting an Annual Career Fair on October 23, 2024, from 7:30-11:30 am in the school’s gymnasium.
Our goal is to inspire the youth in our community to be Career and College ready. It is important for students to explore different career fields in a variety of interest areas or even explore options they have not yet considered. The Annual Career Fair enables students to connect with local companies and helps spread the word about your company and job openings.
We cordially invite you to be a part of this great event. If you are able to join us, you will be responsible for running a booth and discussing with students your workday and the skills and education needed to be successful in your particular career field. If you have any flyers or job postings available, this would be a great opportunity to bring them.
If you are interested in representing your business, please complete the form linked here.
