What Does The Fox Say?
January 23, 2025
If you were at the 12/13/24 Friday Celebration you will not be surprised by my appreciation of the Wicked movie. I saw the Broadway play a lifetime ago in NYC. I know this is a luxury. Sister #1 treated me. Oh the corporate life! I remember walking out of the show thinking, “That changes EVERYTHING!” I won’t spoil it if you haven’t seen it but I gotta say it was better than I thought it would be. I watched the movie with my husband and 11yo daughter and they both loved it. I will admit I had moments of tears. I’m not crying, you’re crying! How so much can be expressed in a scene without words, how the cinematography can demonstrate the gravity (see what I did there?) of emotions, and how our perception of someone can change if we just learn more of who they are… Well, freakin’ done. What I said to the students during that Friday Celebration was that Elphaba didn’t even have a name in the Wizard of Oz. Instead, she is referred to as the Wicked Witch of the West. How sad. In Wicked, we learn of her story. She is not who we thought she was. We had limited information. We didn’t really know. I connected this to the 3Cs (Caring for Self, Caring for Others, Caring for Environment) with, “You are not wicked, you have agency to be kind and show empathy.” It was our December monthly theme after all. We have spent time as a staff talking about agency, assuming positive intent, engaging in courageous conversations. Next year, our school cultural theme will be curiosity. How do we ask questions to seek understanding - this applies to all the work we do in our building: academic and social (social emotional, equity, etc.). How do we really embrace treating others the way we want to be treated? How do we approach others without judgment? How do we advocate without blame? How do we understand our students while acknowledging our biases? How do we educate all our students with an open mind and heart? It is a good theme and we will be ready for it. And maybe, just maybe… it will be “For Good”.
Together, we are Inspire.
Sincerely,
Linda August
Principal
