Thank you so much for your service, Veterans! We also want to thank 3 Wishes Floral and Design Studio for donating flowers, Hometown Realty, Fountain of Love (June Mogg) and Biggby on Pickard for donating refreshments. We are so thankful for all the support in honoring Veterans! Our students and staff worked so hard to honor those that serve and are serving our country so we can enjoy freedoms like going to school. We are so proud of our community and our Veterans!

We ALL have a place in our school and in our community to be KIND! To celebrate World Kindness Day, our students wrote affirmations about each other and wrote notes of appreciation and then delivered those special writings. Our Mustangs are making the world a better place, one day at a time!

All students brought home a feather and your student is welcome to write something that he/she is thankful for and then decorate it. We will be putting them up here at school on our Thankful Turkey to celebrate all the things we have to be thankful for on a turkey in the main hallway. We will send pictures home as our turkey grows!

November is Homelessness Awareness Month and here at McGuire, we want to help bring awareness of homelessness and housing insecurity in our communities. Student council is partnering with United Way to raise money for Gratiot County Hope House through a coin war challenge called “Coins for a Cause”! United Way is committed to matching all funds raised (up to $10,000)! Students can bring in their spare change (or any donations) beginning on Monday, November 18th to Tuesday, November 26th. The classroom that raises the most money will win a pizza party from United Way!

MPPS uses the A.L.I.C.E lockdown model. We have been discussing each letter acronym individually and conclude this segment with a brief overview of all of the letters and how we implement this.

In review, the I in A.L.I.C.E stands for Inform.

• The purpose of Inform is to continue to communicate information in real-time, if it is safe to do so. Information should always be clear, direct and in plain language, not using codes. Here are four tips to help you ensure your administrators, teachers, staff, and students are prepared to utilize communication strategies effectively.

  • Provide Real-Time Information
    Help keep those closest to danger informed so they know whether to switch strategies. For example, maybe they have the opportunity to switch from lockdown to evacuate.

  • Take Note of Surroundings
    Provide as much information as possible to others including things like the intruder’s location, number of intruders, physical description of intruders, the kinds of weapons, and the number of injured people.

  • Use Plain Language
    Do not use code words. During an emergency some people may not remember code words and visitors will not know what they mean.

  • Determine How to Inform
    It’s important to determine how your organization will Inform during an emergency. Options can include your PA system, walkie talkie, classroom phone, or cellphones.

  Remember, knowledge is power. Staying aware and informed is an important defense against an armed intruder.

As we gear up for colder temperatures please make sure your student brings the proper winter gear with them to school. We go outside each day unless it is raining or below 0 for a classroom recess and a lunch recess. It helps if your student's items are labeled as well, so if things end up in the lost & found they can be returned!

Students need to have warm clothing, including winter coat, hat, gloves/mittens, boots, snow pants. These items can be expensive, if you need help please write in a note in your child's school agenda for their teacher. We can see how we can help.

During the course of the school year, our buildings are obligated to practice at least 5 Fire Drills, 2 Tornado Drills and 3 Lockdown drills. At times, we do have our YSU Liason or other officers from the Police Department assist in our drills. We cover with our students the locations of where to go for each drill, what to do during specific drills, and how to properly evacuate when it is needed. You can also find this information in your child's Handbook at the front of the student agenda.

During the first weeks of school, classes read the story, I'm Not Scared, I'm Prepared book in their class with their teachers. This book focused on the main components of the safety protocols that we work on with children.

At McGuire Elementary, our school expectations are Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible and we are committed to teaching and reinforcing positive behavior expectations in all areas of the school from the classroom to the playground. Each area of our school day, has a focused set of positive expectations that we teach, model, and practice - on what it looks like to be safe, respectful, and responsible.

Our Mustang matrix is at the front of your student's agenda in the pages included for the student handbook, we encourage you to review these expectations at home with your child too.

Daily our students earn Dojo Points for meeting positive expectations, we recognize students with our Mustang Tickets, Weekly Drawings, Positive Office Referrals, Positive Postcards mailed home, and Students of the Month.

We know our students are still growing and developing mentally and socially, so we recognize it is always a work in progress when teaching and reteaching expectations. We utilize restorative practices - including repairing the harm, circle ups, and more.

MPPS Nutrition Club is a unique community support that provides supplemental, weekend food twice a month to participating students.

If your son or daughter qualifies for free or reduced school meals and this nutritional support is needed, he or she is welcome to be enrolled and participate in the MPPS – Nutrition Club.

MPPS - Nutrition Club is made possible through an amazing partnership with the Community Compassion Network and Greater Lansing Food Bank. Financial support is provided by generous donations from many community members and organizations including Mount Pleasant City Women’s Club, Mount Pleasant Area Community Foundation, First United Methodist Church and many other local businesses and groups. In addition there is a multitude of volunteers who donate their time to make this program happen.

All medications must be brought to the office with the appropriate health form. Please do not send medications to school with your child. This includes inhalers and epi-pens.

All students will be dropped off at the front door and will walk to the west playground entrance at 8:35. When you see the adult supervisor come out the front door, please feel free to begin dropping off if you are within our loading zone, between the McGuire sign in front of the school and the front porch. Come in the east entrance, drive to the front, drop off and exit the parking lot. Use the exit closest to the front door of the school. The first bell will ring at 8:40 and then school will officially start at 8:45. If it is too cold or raining, you will follow the same drop-off time and the student will come in the school at the west entrance.

Afternoon will be very similar to the morning. Dismissal is at 3:49. 3rd and 5th will be dismissed in front of the school and 4th grade has the option to park in the small parking lot in front of the gym to be dismissed. Please remain in the vehicle if you are in front of the school in the line and we will bring your student to you. If you would like to park and walk to the porch area, you are welcome to park in the far west lot and walk over to the front of the school.

Friendly reminder of our No Outside Food policy for Student Lunch time. Students must bring their lunch to school or choose a school lunch option.

McGuire has a no student cell phone policy in our student handbook. If a cell phone comes to school with a student it should be turned off and stored in their locked from 8:40am-3:49pm.

We also have a no hats or hoods policy inside the school building, students can wear them outside during recess.
