Welcome Back and Happy New Year!
I hope you had a chance to rest, recharge, and enjoy time with loved ones over the break.
As we start the new year, I want to highlight two things:
Hills Hall is open! This space includes an open meeting area, a conference room, office space, and two focus rooms. Students may use the space if accompanied by a staff member.
With cold weather approaching, please stay on top of your email for updates on potential inclement weather days (more information below).
We’re halfway through the year, and we’ve made significant strides toward our building goals. Here are just a few highlights:
We exceeded our MAP Reading growth goal by 9%.
88.3% of IHMS students have missed less than 10% of school. (Our goal is to reduce chronic absenteeism to 10% or less.)
95% of students kept their phones put away during class in the first semester.
Students averaged proficiency in one skill per week on IXL.
Growth in grit, growth mindset, and self-management was shown across the board on the Panorama survey.
These are just a few of the many ways we measure success, and it’s clear our students are making impressive strides. Thank you for the essential role you all are playing in their growth. I’m excited to see even more growth as we move into the second half of the year.
Here’s to a fantastic start to the semester!
Thank You!!
On behalf of the entire staff, I would like to say a big thank you for the thoughtful staff gifts. It really means a lot to us to feel appreciated, and your kindness truly brightened our day. We are so grateful for everything you do for the school community, and we’re lucky to have such a supportive group behind us.
Thank you again for your generosity!

Inclement Weather Procedures Update
Winter weather is here and we want to be sure families are as ready as possible for possible schedule changes or inclement weather cancellations. As of December 5, 2024, the Shawnee Mission School District has updated its inclement weather plans to include Plan C- which includes a 2-hour delay option. This new option aligns us with our neighboring districts in Johnson County and will facilitate common decision-making with regard to inclement weather. Please review the district’s inclement weather procedures on this website: https://www.smsd.org/families/weather
This webpage also includes information about how you can be informed about any inclement weather announcements from the Shawnee Mission School District.
