Weekly Community Updates - March 1, 2024
Dear Students and Families,
And just like that, it's March! Our seniors are starting to prepare for Senior Exhibition Day which is Friday March 29th. This is an exciting time for our seniors to showcase their hard work and our 9th - 11th graders get to learn from the seniors as they watch Senior Exhibition presentations.
This week, we focused on our freshmen diving into the Zones of Regulation during Flex Time. Understanding the Zones of Regulation provides students with tools to navigate emotions effectively, both in and out of the classroom. One highlight of the week was Thursday's advisory vs. advisory Pictionary event in the gym. Students were enthusiastic to win a donut party for their advisory!
I hope everyone has a nice weekend.
Take care,
Maritza Torres
Congratulations to Oceana’s Mock Trial team!
For the second time in two years, our Mock Trial team made it to the county’s semifinals. In addition to our whole team’s accomplishments, our court artists and court journalist qualified for the state competition in March. Our court artists, Adelina Lim and Aubrey Depriest, took first and second place in the county’s court artist competition; Sarah Ghazzawi, our court journalist, took second place in the court journalist competition. In Mock Trial, students take on the roles of attorneys, witnesses, bailiffs, court clerks, court artists, and court journalists for a criminal case; this year’s case was a murder case. We are proud of all of our team. They did an amazing job throughout the competition season.
Members of this year’s Mock Trial Team are: Chey Tam, Isabella Woo, Timothy Schimizzi, Maylene Marks, Sofia Tong, Emil Groth, Joie Wu, Marina Sergeeva, Jayden Vong, Abigail Reines, Tyler Paing, Timothy Tran, Sagar Rajan, Ashley Rain Anacleto, Bethany Zhao, Renzo Fukuda, Nicholas Langlands, Cesar Pumacayo, Adelina Lim, Audrey Depriest, and Sarah Ghazzawi. Our team’s amazing attorney coach is Marc Zafferano.

Freshman Class Bonding
This week, the 9th grade class learned about the Zones of Regulation in full week of Flex Time activities. The Zones of Regulation is a tool to practice self-awareness of how we are feeling and allows us to have a shared language and let others know what we need.
The goal of this week was to learn this shared language. Counselors will be following up in Humanities 9 about different ways to regulate one's self.
The Future Medical Professionals Club
The Future Medical Professionals Club and the Computer Science Club visited the Collaborative Haptics and Robotics in Medicine Lab at Stanford University this week. Our students got the chance to hear an introductory lecture from Stanford Professor Allison Okamura, then visited with her team of graduate students to hear about their individual research projects and to test out their robotic equipment focusing on the sense of touch. Students saw a research version of the da Vinci Robot, which is used for minimally invasive robotic surgery, and had a chance to hear about what it's like to be a graduate student in mechanical engineering.

Celebrating Girls Varsity Soccer
What a season! The Oceana Varsity girls soccer team had a season for the record books. Missing CCS by a power point, the ladies placed first in the PAL Lake division, sitting as Co-Champions with Mills High School. With a tied league record of (6-1-1) both varsity programs battled throughout the winter season.
The Oceana ladies finished with an impressive overall record of 11-1-1, establishing their overall dominance in their division. Since the initial start of the Oceana varsity program in 2013; there has not been a more dominate team like this one. With a total of 55 goals scored and 10 goals allowed; this group took care of business.

10th Grade - Multiple Intelligences Assessment
Throughout the month of January, counselors provided a lesson for all 10th grade students about the Multiple Intelligences assessment on californiacolleges.edu. The Multiple Intelligences assessment is a questionnaire that provides a more rounded view of students by looking at the following types of intelligence: bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, linguistic, logical-mathematical, musical, naturalist, spatial and existential. Educators and counselors who use Intelligences can spend more time helping students and less time trying to figure out a student’s natural gifts. Ask your students what their results were and what they learned about themselves by taking the assessment!
