Zscaler Troubleshooting Guide
Amplify Tablet
What is Zsclaer?
Zscaler allows organizations to define, monitor and enforce policies that enable them to limit user access to certain URL categories. Source
What does that mean for GCS tablet users? In a nutshell, it means that students should no longer be able to access social networking and other non-educational websites.
FAQs
- Student log-in credentials not working. What do we do? - Make sure students have entered it correctly- double check. Then, email Cheri the student name, ID, 8 digit b-day. Cheri will send to whomever needs it.
- Can students use the guest network until it’s worked out? YES! gcsguest gcsguest is the login for guest network- good option until things are worked out.
- Teachers using guest network (but signing in with GCS credentials) with iPads can’t get to YouTube. I thought they were supposed to have the same access that they do on desktops. Solutions? They should. Can you verify that the ipad has the certificate installed, that the teacher did sign in using their creds, and that they are on the Guest network? **Try logging in with the full email address, not just the username. i.e. doej@gcsnc.com instead of doej**
- Is the MS allowed to have the password for the other networks (other than the tab network) at the school? Just the Guest network
- Is there a way to log out of credentials or do you have to wait until the next day? For example, the student I mentioned below - I logged him in as a guest, to see if it was a credential problem or something else, and now I don’t know how to remove the guest credentials. YES! On the tablet or device go to Ip.zscaler.com and sign out there.
Screenshots
If the student has a screen like this after they log in to zscaler, it does not mean they have done anything wrong or that their password needs to be reset. It just means they are still on https (you can see it crossed out there in the address bar). They can click “proceed anyway” and it should continue to work.
GCS Zscaler Certificate Download Steps
Click the button if you have to manually install the Zscaler certificate.
Why the MiFi?
- Why do I need the MiFi? The MiFi is needed to install register and in some cases, reregister tablets. Once you register the tablet, be sure to FORGET the MiFi network and return the tablet to Tab1. Ask your PLEF for step-by-step instructions.
- How do I register tablets using the MiFi and the student QR code? 1. Add the tablet to the MiFi network. 2. Scan the QR code at the prompt. 3. Pull down the clock and move the tablet back to the MiFi network. 4. Complete registration as you normally would. 5. Move tablet back to the Tab1 network upon complete. Ask your PLEF if you need additional guidance.
- Will the MiFi credential be embedded in new student QR codes or will the above process be the norm? Yes, the credentials will be embedded but as of March 5, that date is TBA.
Anything else?
Thank you for all you're doing as we continue to move forward with the PACE grant. Please read Robin's N2Ks as they provide up to date information on Zscaler and all things tablet-related. Be sure to ask your PLEF for help - you do not have to do this alone.
