July 2024
County Updates
The month you have been waiting for...JULY!
Greetings - County Fair month has finally arrived!
First of all, congrats to all of our Jackson County 4-H'ers for choosing to be involved in Jackson Co. 4-H regardless if you plan to exhibit at the Jackson County Fair or not! You are all winners in our county's 4-H program however you choose to participate in all that MN 4-H has to offer!
As we go into July there are many exciting 4-H showcases taking place in Jackson County where our 4-Hers to exhibit their project development and skills learned throughout the 2023-2024 4-H year. Our younger 4-H'ers, Cloverbuds (K-2) and Junior 4-H'ers (grades 3-5) may either be exhibiting for the first time, trying out a new project area, or competing for divisional and overall prizes. Many of our older 4-H'ers, Intermediate (grades 6-8) or Senior (grades 9+) will be competing to earn trips to the MN State Fair in General Projects, Livestock Projects, Horse, Dog, or Livestock Judging!
A reminder that as our 4-H showcases get closer, the 4-H'ers nerves, stresses, and competitive mindsets may start to increase. We want to remind 4-H'ers and families that as part of MN 4-H and the UMN Extension Department of Youth Development we want to make all Jackson County 4-H showcases a positive experience for all youth. Whether they be youth who are in their last year as a 4-H member or those who are just starting their 4-H career. Take the time to remember all the great things 4-H teaches youth. Humility, compassion, communication, collaboration, responsibility, and patience are a few we ourselves remember learning as 4-H'ers once upon a time.
Let's continue to encourage and remind our 4-H members, families, volunteers, and sponsors the larger reasons of why the Jackson County 4-H program is one of the best in Minnesota. We challenge you to see how many of our community members and fairgoers stop and ask you questions about your projects and or animals. Take the time to tell your 4-H story and why you are a proud Jackson County 4-H'er. The more we tell our 4-H story, the more we will continue to grow 4-H.
We encourage you to keep making the best better as we finish out the summer and prepare for a new 4-H year in October.
Good luck to all of you as we start the most wonderful time of the 4-H year! :)

Winner's Circle at the Jackson County Fair
Jackson County 4-H wants to invite you all to join us at the 2024 Winner's Circle during the Jackson County Fair this year!
But first...
What is the Winner's Circle and why do we do it?
The Winners Circle is held the day after general entry day at the Jackson County Fair. This event is for the public and 4-H Families to come together to celebrate the successes of our 4-H members and Cloverbuds in the General Project areas. Not only do we recognize the Champions in each category, we also take a moment to celebrate our outgoing seniors, award senior scholarships, present the 2024 Jackson County Farm Family Award, and shed light on our incredible Cloverbud program.
We hope that you all can join us or stop in during this evening of recognition to kick off the 2024 Jackson County Fair!
Winner's Circle will be held on Tuesday, July 23rd at 5:30 pm in the Olson Pavilion
Immediately following, there will be a picture session where media and other interested parties
will be able to take pictures of the winners and their exhibits in the Blue Building.
Federated Rural Electric will have REA T-Shirts for pick up and will be handing out $10 to non-auction participants.
Jackson County Fair - Livestock Grooming Rule Reminder
Per the Jackson County 4-H and MN 4-H Premium Book and Rules.
All grooming of livestock, including clipping, trimming and manipulation of hair/wool (such as blocking on sheep, pulling up hair on beef and working up top lines on dairy) must be done by the exhibitor, members of the immediate family* or a livestock resource person** chosen by the 4-H family.
*Immediate family members are defined as parents, step-parents, legal guardians, brothers or sisters.
**A livestock resource person is defined as someone who is working with the 4-H’er/4-H family to help them learn management and fitting and grooming skills in their project area. An identified livestock resource person would be allowed to work with the 4-Her and their family during the fitting and grooming process to guide and teach these skills. The 4-H’er exhibiting the animal MUST be present and involved in the fitting process at the county fair.
Animal Science Updates
Livestock Quality Assurance and Ethics (LQA&E) Training DUE JULY 10!
Did you miss the in person training event?
Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) online training is available. The online training is one hour long and must be taken using a desktop computer or laptop – it is not available with ipads or on other mobile devices. Instructions are found via this document (z.umn.edu/MnYQCAinfo). It can be accessed through members’ 4Honline account. There is a cost of $12 that must be paid by credit card.
Review the full Minnesota 4-H LQA Policy here (z.umn.edu/MnLQAEPolicy).
**Training should be completed before the Jackson County Deadline: July 10 by 4:30 P.M.**
Failure to complete the training and submit your certificate by July 10 may result in ineligibility for a 4-H livestock trip to the MN State Fair.
NEW Cloverbud Policy Update!
The Minnesota 4-H Youth Development Cloverbud policy creates a uniform set of rules for participation to maintain developmental appropriateness and safety for our youngest 4-H members. A rule related to Cloverbuds and animals has been updated.
When Cloverbuds and animals are together at a 4-H program, families may now choose one of two acceptable ways to guide and monitor involvement in non-mounted activities:
1. The responsible person is in control of the animal with the Cloverbud at their side.
2. The Cloverbud is in control of the animal with the responsible person at their side to assist or take control of the animal when needed or as directed by staff, volunteers or show managers.
In the horse project, the second option does not apply to mounted activities. When a Cloverbud is mounted on a horse, the horse must always have a lead line and be under the control of the responsible person.
Cloverbud families may choose either option. The safety of all young people is maintained as a responsible person will be next to the Cloverbud and animal. The new option acknowledges the growth of the Cloverbud with their project animal and recognizes that many families are engaged in learning at open shows where the Cloverbud-aged youth are in control of the animal. Cloverbud exhibitions will continue to be non-competitive.
For more information regarding Cloverbud policies, visit: z.umn.edu/CloverbudPolicy
