Hazelwood To Home
Learning In Community
From Your Principal
Happy New Year! If you are anything like me, you are ready to close the door on 2020 and welcome 2021 with open arms. Over the break, our staff really missed seeing students on Zoom. When I visited classes this week, it was wonderful to see their smiling faces full of optimism and eagerness to continue learning with their classmates and teachers. I also want to acknowledge that the holidays were challenging for some families. Please know that your Hazelwood family is here to support you with community resources. We care so much about your children and your family.
In this newsletter you will find upcoming events and information for the month of January. Please note that teachers are doing mid year assessments during this month. You can expect your student to take the diagnostic i-Ready math and reading tests this month. Families, you can also expect students to be challenged by the questions asked on these tests. It is through this questioning process that i-Ready is able to determine the correct level for your student. We ask that you do not help your child answer these questions. Instead please encourage your students with language you can find in this link. The end of the first semester is February 2nd and you can expect report cards to be sent home on February 11th.
In light of recent events in our nation, I want to acknowledge the difficult times that we are facing. Some of you may struggle with how best to help your child navigate the traumatic news they may be hearing in conversations or in the media. I am including some resources that might help if you plan to process these historic events with your child.

Thank you for your incredible partnership this year in helping your student to learn. Words cannot adequately express how incredibly grateful we are for you. We recognize that without your support and stamina, none of the work we are doing with students would be possible. I hope you join me in looking forward to the exciting future ahead at Hazelwood as we begin the process of returning to in-person learning. We have a lot to look forward to in 2021!

From Your School Psychologists
Hello Hazelwood families!
We want to invite you to pause before reading the rest of this newsletter to close your eyes and take three deep breaths. Taking tiny moments here and there to find a bit of peace can make a big difference.
We know from research that “connection is protection.” Staying emotionally connected with your children helps them to rebound from stressful or difficult situations. It can be very helpful to build time to connect with your child into your daily routine. For example:
Before bedtime, ask your child to share their “rose, bud, and thorn” for the day: one high point of their day (rose), one low point of their day (thorn), and something they’re looking forward to (bud).
During a meal, have all family members share three things they are grateful for.
Try a guessing game! In the evening, have your child tell you two things that really happened that day and one that did not. You can try to guess which thing isn’t true!
These simple conversations can be excellent ways to help your family stay connected and build resilience.
Remember, we are here to help you and support you!
Wishing you and your family a Happy New Year,

Anchored Families: It is not too late to join!
To support families in doing just that, Hazelwood and our PTA purchased a course as well as parent coaching opportunities created by Cher Anderton, MSW, LSWAIC. This course is free to all families at Hazelwood. The innovative online course composed of five modules will be accessible anytime. It also includes a workbook and twice monthly live online parent coaching where parents can connect with each other and dive deeper into implementation and practice the 5 Must Have Tools In Your Parenting Toolbox. By intentionally practicing these tools, we can learn to model the very skills we want our kids to emulate. You can choose any part of the course and do not need to attend every meeting. This is being made available to support you!
The course was created using concepts from well-researched practices such as Positive Discipline (a parenting approach that is culturally responsive and mutually respectful of kids and adults) and social and emotional learning competencies from The Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL).
The course is available on a site called Kajabi. To receive the course free of charge, please use the Coupon Code: HAZEL. Only one course per household, please.
