Proud to be a Hawk Today

I know you are getting a lot of messages regarding the Corona Virus today. When school started, that was all the children could talk about. The energy level was high, and not in a positive way. I gave a brief message during our morning announcements. I reminded everyone to wash their hands before eating and after using the restroom. I also reminded the children not to share food and drinks. The big message though was to be kind to one another. Mr. Ainsworth and I want the children to know that it isn't OK to be unkind to anyone regarding this outbreak, especially not in a racially charged way. Before lunch we announced that the children could choose to eat outside. The weather was beautiful. The kids were delighted. Mr. Ainsworth and I visited with them and the mood was so much lighter.

Kids are resilient. It was a real lesson to me that they are watching us and how we handle difficult situations. This pandemic is making a big impact on the world. I try hard to find a positive in every situation. The only one I can find here is that we have an opportunity to model calm, mature behavior in the face of adversity. We can show our children how to band together when things get tough. I am grateful to be in a position where I can model that for our children.

The staff at Los Alamos Middle School is amazing. All day I saw adults being excellent role models. They spoke calmly, offered facts, and allayed fears. You would have been happy to see your children being cared for today.
