A Movie Review--"The Best Christmas Pageant Ever"
On Monday, after a week of wading through the election results and wrapping up our sermon series on faith and politics, I felt ready for a change of pace. I needed a break from all the news, so I went to Tinseltown to watch a movie—one that brought both laughter and a few happy tears. I’ve never written a movie review for the newsletter before, but after these past few months, it felt refreshing to share something lighter. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is a wonderful family movie that captures the spirit of Christmas in a fun, fresh way, beautifully bringing Barbara Robinson’s beloved story to life.
Many of us know the Christmas story so well that we could recite it in our sleep. We picture the shepherds, the wise men, Mary and Joseph beside the manger—all part of a story that’s as familiar as the carols we sing. But this movie shows us that there’s always something new to discover, even in the oldest stories.
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever centers on a small-town tradition—a Christmas pageant that, for 74 years, has gone off like clockwork, with angels in costume, kids dressed as shepherds, and Mary and Joseph by the manger. But everything changes when the Herdman kids—known by everyone as the town troublemakers—show up and take over the lead roles. These kids lie, steal, even smoke cigars (yes, even the girls!), and are certainly not anyone’s idea of a “proper” Nativity cast. But when the Herdmans get involved, the whole town of Emmanuel is in for a Christmas pageant like they’ve never seen.
What makes this movie so special is that it lets us see the Christmas story through the eyes of these rough-around-the-edges kids, who are hearing it for the first time. They ask real questions. They see things in the story that we might miss. They remind us that Mary and Joseph were ordinary people, in a tough spot, who didn’t have everything perfectly together—just like the rest of us. Through laughter and even a few tears, this film draws us to see Christmas as not just beautiful and holy, but messy, real, and full of grace.
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is also a reminder that Jesus came to love all of us—not just the “good” and “proper” folks, but also the rough and rowdy ones. In the film, one character named Alice insists, “Jesus would not have suffered Herdmans!” But we know, of course, that he absolutely would have. And by the end, we get the feeling that Imogene Herdman may understand Mary and Jesus better than anyone else in the room.
Sometimes, the joy and beauty of Christmas can feel hidden under the daily mess of life, just like freshly fallen snow gets covered in grime. But God loves us anyway, and through all the “muck and mud,” we’re invited to see His light and hope shining through.
If you’re looking for a Christmas story that makes you laugh, makes you think, and gives you a fresh look at the Nativity, I’d encourage you to gather the family (or a car load of friends) and watch The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. May it remind us all that the gift of Christmas is for everyone—and that it makes all the difference.
See you in church!

Sunday's Bible Readings
Numbers 13:1-3, 25-33
The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites; from each of their ancestral tribes you shall send a man, every one a leader among them.” So Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran, according to the command of the Lord, all of them leading men among the Israelites.
At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land. And they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the Israelites in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the congregation and showed them the fruit of the land. And they reported to him and said, “We came to the land to which you sent us; it flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. Yet the people who live in the land are strong, and the towns are fortified and very large, and besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. The Amalekites live in the land of the Negeb; the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites live in the hill country, and the Canaanites live by the sea and along the Jordan.”
But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against this people, for they are stronger than we.” So they brought to the Israelites an unfavorable report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land that we have gone through as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great size. There we saw the Nephilim (the Anakites come from the Nephilim), and to ourselves we seemed like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”

For Discussion on November 20: Belonging Pt. 2—We now turn to the April 2023 edition of The Presbyterian Outlook. What does belonging look like? Feel like? Sound like? This special issue of the Outlook examines the concept of belonging from a variety of perspectives to help us address what some are calling an “epidemic” of isolation in today’s society. How can people and communities of faith respond to this need? This issue of the Outlook will inspire readers to ask and answer this question. For the next several weeks, articles noted for discussion are from the Outlook (April 2023 issue) unless otherwise noted. Articles for discussion: We will begin with a reflection on Micah 6:1-8, 1 Corinthians 1:18-31, Matthew 5:1-12. “Belonging” Dr. Eric Barreto, associate professor of New Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary, with Dr. Willie James Jennings, professor at Yale Divinity School and author of After Whiteness: An Education in Belonging.

JOB OPENING AT WPC--Seeking Director of Student & Family Ministries
Our church is currently seeking a part-time Director of Student and Family Ministries, a role essential to growing our programs for children, youth, and families. Let’s all be in prayer and discernment, asking God to bring the right person into this ministry. As we pray, let’s also consider people in our lives who may be searching for work or who are retired and might feel called to serve in this meaningful way. With everyone’s prayers and support, we can find the right person to help us strengthen our student and family ministries.
Westminster Presbyterian Church is seeking a part-time (20 hours/week) Director of Student and Family Ministries to lead our Christian Education & Discipleship programs. The ideal candidate is devoted to Jesus Christ, has a heart for evangelism, is very familiar with the challenges and lifestyles of today’s families with school-age children, and is very comfortable with communications technology and social media, and is theologically comfortable with an environment that is a friendly and diverse congregation. 2024 Stewardship Campaign—“Entrusted Treasures: God’s Gifts in Our Hands”
As we reach the close of our stewardship campaign, we want to extend a heartfelt “thank you” to everyone who has pledged their support for the coming year. Each pledge is a meaningful investment in WPC’s mission and a commitment to the legacy we all share. For anyone who has not yet pledged, there is always room to join in this journey of faith—pledges are welcome anytime, and you may place your pledge card in the offering bags every Sunday, mail it to the church office, or pledge online at wpcboardman.com/give. Also, stewardship packets with campaign info & pledge cards remain available in the atrium. Together, we are laying a strong foundation for 2025 and beyond, entrusted with the treasures of faith and ready to carry them forward. Thank you for your dedication, your generosity, and your role in the life of WPC.
Shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child
Operation Christmas Child is underway and you're invited and encouraged to participate. A shoebox of gifts is just the beginning of a faith journey for millions of boys and girls around the world, because inside each shoebox, Samaritans Purse includes a booklet (in the appropriate language) telling the Gospel message of Jesus. Please pick up a shoebox in the atrium today? If you are homebound, please call the church office and a box can be delivered to your home. Boxes need to be returned by Sunday, Nov. 17 so they can begin their journey.
If you choose to pack a box, please read the instructions on "How to Pack a Shoebox." There are detailed lists of good items to pack and items that are to be avoided.
