Riverside Review

Principal Message
Dear RSI Families,
This year's International Fair was a vibrant celebration of our diverse cultures and traditions! Students, families, and staff came together to share food, music, and art from around the world. From the colorful displays representing different countries to the delicious international cuisine, the event was a true feast for the senses. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of this year's fair! Your enthusiasm and participation make our school a truly special place where every culture is valued and celebrated. We are so thankful to be supported by this wonderful Hawk community. Please take a look at pictures from the event last evening and join in the celebration next school year.
I would also like to send a special thank you to parent Tiffany Preston, Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana. Ms. Preston is working in the General Crimes Unit of the Criminal Division, and prosecutes white collar and securities fraud, public corruption, kidnapping, human trafficking and child exploitation cases. She is the Project Safe Childhood Coordinator and Human Trafficking Coordinator. Tiffany presented to the RSI parent group on Wednesday night and the information was simply essential for any parent with a child at this school level. If you missed this opportunity, please know we will offer a second session in the second semester. As a dad and educator I assure you that this is information you really can't afford to miss. I'll remind you when the second session returns. Thanks for your help, Tiffany!
Sincerely,
Dana Kaminski, Ph.D.

Skyward allows parents to access students’ grades from teachers’ electronic grade books.
ParentSquare will be used as the primary communication tool between the HSE school district and students, parents, and staff for emergency situations (for example: school delays or closings). It will also be used for attendance and general information as well throughout the year to notify parents about important information, upcoming events, or milestones.
iPads are required for all students in the 5th and 6th grade to expand our HSE21 curriculum. Please visit our website https://rsi.hseschools.org/academics/tech-in-the-classroom

Welcome back RSI!
Thank you for supporting our Dine to Donate at Portillo’s this past Wednesday, each time you support an event you are making an impact on the overall fundraising for items such as teacher grants and student lead projects.
Speaking of Teacher Grants: These are grants that you contribute to through fundraising activities like Hawk Parties, Read A Thon, and Spirit Wear, among others. We have distributed information to teachers encouraging them to apply for a classroom grant, providing the necessary funds and specifying the intended use of the grant.
We will be using your voice to vote on these grants at our next PTO meeting on December 10th. Mark it on your calendar and ensure that you show up to see the great work that your money is going toward.
Teachers, please remember that the teacher grants were open on 10/1 and are due by 12/8. The PTO meeting will review them on 12/10, and teachers will receive notification by 12/17.
Spirit Wear sales for Winter: Coming soon, we will have another opportunity to purchase VERY cool Spirit Wear SWAG before the Holiday’s. Great opportunity to get that special gift for your child or teacher or favorite staff member.
Shopping at Kroger makes a HUGE difference for our school. A total of 135 households have elected to have RSI for their rewards program and you raised $390.97 from July to September. Thank you for making it happen RSI.
Counselors' Corner
The school social worker at RSI is offering a support group for students geared toward improving healthy relationships. This support group will go over how to recognize unhealthy relationships and implement skills to improve communication with others. If you think your student would benefit from this support group, please fill out this form. Once a student has been selected for a group, we require PARENT/GUARDIAN PERMISSION. A link will be sent out via email and must be returned in order for the student to participate in the group. This group will run for 8 weeks and will take place during RTI or TE time depending on the grade of the student. I am hoping to begin this group the week of Oct. 28th.
A note from Mrs. Satterly to 5th grade families:
I’m thrilled to share that I have had the pleasure of meeting all of our 5th graders and introducing myself as their school counselor! It’s been wonderful getting to know each of them, and I look forward to continuing this journey as they navigate their time here at Riverside.
This fall, I will be leading class lessons focused on organization skills. Students will create personalized action plans to help them improve their organization of both physical spaces and tasks. I believe these skills will not only enhance their academic performance but also contribute to their overall success and confidence.
To further support your child’s growth, I encourage you to engage with them at home. Help them practice their action plans, establish routines, and create organized spaces for their school materials. Your encouragement and involvement can make a significant difference in reinforcing these important skills.
Thank you for your continued support as we work together to help our students thrive!

This program, supported by the Fishers Youth Assistance Program, is designed to provide students a little extra nourishment for the weekend until they can receive a hot meal at school on Monday.
Here's how the program works. Your student will pick up a small sack of food to be taken home over the weekend. The sack is filled with individually wrapped snacks such as granola bars, fruit cups, pop tarts, peanut butter/crackers, Goldfish crackers, etc. The type of snacks will vary each week. Please let us know if your child has a peanut allergy as he/she will receive a special bag of peanut-free snacks.
There is no cost to you or the school. To be part of this free program, you must sign up your family online. https://forms.gle/qQ2GgbD32C66Dhfg7 or have questions, please contact FYAPFood@gmail.com
You can also reach out to Brenna Anton, the 6th grade school counselor, if you have questions.
Social Emotional Learning
5th Grade
Summary:
In this week’s lesson, your child practiced breaking down situations that feel big and unmanageable into smaller, more manageable pieces. They will also practice identifying a small change someone could make to manage their strong emotions the next time a situation occurs.
Try This at Home:
Tell your child about a recurring situation in your life that typically causes you to feel a strong emotion, like stress or anger. Ask your child what you can change to make the situation better, and why they would suggest that change.
6th Grade
Summary:
In this week’s lesson, your child identified some of their own guiding principles.
Try This at Home:
Ask your child to share some of their guiding principles. Ask what guiding principles they think are common in your household or extended family.

Canvas
The following instructions are how to create and pair accounts in Canvas. Your HSE students will be using Canvas throughout virtual and in-person instructions. If you have a child or children that are new to the district, please use the following instructions to link your child's Canvas account to your parent account. Please note that if you have already created a Parent Canvas account and linked your child(ren)'s account(s), you will not need to do this.
You will need your child's school email address and ID#. This information can be found in Skyward. Please click here to access Skyward. If the link is not working, you can go to the HSE homepage and click on the Canvas tab located at the top right of the screen.
Once you are logged in, you will select your child's name from the drop down menu under Family Access at the top of the page. Next, you will click on the Student Info tab from the column on the left. Your child's school email can be found next to the word School in the middle of the screen (just to the right of their school picture) and their school ID # is located under their picture (their school ID # is labeled as Other ID).
Steps:
- Please click here to access Canvas. If the link is not working, you can go to the HSE homepage and click on the Canvas tab located at the top right of the screen. You will click on the Students/Staff Portal rectangle to login with your child's information, using your child's full school email address as the username. Enter "hse" in front of their 6 digit other ID number for the password. You will now be logged in under their name.
- While on their Canvas page, click on Account and then Settings. Look to the right and click Pair with Observer. You will need to write down the code so you can use it to link your accounts.
- Click Account and Logout. You are now logged out of your child's account.
- If you have multiple students in the district, you will need to complete steps 1-3 for each of your children. You will need a pairing code for each student in an HSE school.
- Once you have a pairing code for each of your children, you will click here to access the home page of Canvas. If the link is not working, you can go to the HSE homepage and click on the Canvas tab located at the top right of the screen. You will click on the Parent Canvas Portal rectangle to create your profile. You will need your name, email, create a password, and one student pairing code. Click on Start Participating.
- Check your email now to finalize your Canvas sign-up.
- To add other children, go back to the HSE homepage, click Canvas tab, click Parent Portal, and login. Click on Account, click on Observing, and add your next child's pairing code.
