OV NEWS and EVENTS
OV Families,
As you may know, as a staff, we decided a little over 3 weeks ago to move to assigned tables at lunch time. If you didn’t see the original communication, you can read it HERE. After two weeks of assigned seating for the first half of lunchtime, we have seen a fairly drastic change in student behavior overall. Across the board, behaviors have improved while students are in the lunchroom. We are still working on improving the garbage issue at all three grade-levels, but we are well on our way. We are now entering the next phase of our plan, where grade-levels will be able to earn “Choice Seating Days.” The plan is that if a grade-level meets our expectations Monday to Thursday, they get to choose seats on Friday. Our building leadership team is meeting this week to discuss what the next phase should be if/when classes consistently earn these choice seating days.
Below are some articles that have been provided to me by the consultants we work with on a regular basis around student behavior. When they visited OV and observed during lunchtimes, one of their top suggestions was to move to assigned seating. The top article below addresses lunchtime assigned seating, and the other three are research articles around the benefits of seating charts in general.
- How Assigned Seats During Lunchtime Can Foster a Positive School Culture | KQED
- Create a Culture, Not a Classroom: Why Seating Charts Matter for Student Success | EdSurge News
- The psychology behind a great seating plan (innerdrive.co.uk)
- Does Where A Student Sits Really Matter? - The Impact of Seating Locations on Student Classroom Learning - ProQuest
I will again update you in a few weeks to let you know how things are progressing and to communicate the next phase. Thank you for your support!

Did your student lose a jacket, hoodie, water bottle, hat, lunch box, umbrella, beanie, or other items?
We will display our Lost and Found items in the cafeteria during all three lunches on Monday (March 4th) and Tuesday (March 5th). Students may look for their lost items during their lunchtime after the first 15 minutes. Families are welcome to search for lost items on those two dates between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm. Please check in at the main office and proceed to the cafeteria.
Any Lost and Found items not picked up will be donated.

NJHS will have a meeting on March 13th in the library 2:45 to 4pm.
Students can ride the activity bus home.
On February 27th, OV hosted a Dinner with the Assistant Principal, Ms. Beverly Moore, for our Spanish-speaking families. The dinner was well attended, and the discussion was interesting and informative. Ms. Moore addressed questions on school security and safety concerns, students' behavior issues, school rules and consequences, classroom learning, and many more.
In the spirit of inclusion and equity, we are planning to host similar events in different languages in the future. Please contact us if you would like us to host an event in your first language.
A note from our Librarian:
This week, students learned about accessing FREE audio and e-books using the Sora app. They can access it on their computers through the Clever Portal or download the app for free on their personal devices. Our school purchases some book titles, but students can also access thousands of titles from the Sno-Isle library system through our partnership. They can electronically check out up to 3 titles for 3 weeks at a time. It's a fantastic way to participate in story time together!
Mark your calendars! On Friday, March 8th, from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm, the Mukilteo Library will be hosting a crafting session called Teen String Things. Join other teens and get creative as you learn how to make amazing things with string. This event is for teens in grades 6 through 12.
Come and see Mrs. Peterson in the library if you have any questions.
Happy reading!

The Mukilteo School District aims to assist students in earning the high school credits necessary for graduation by providing them with the chance to earn credits for a language they already know. Each year, 8th-grade students at OV are offered the opportunity to take the World Language Proficiency Exam (WLPE). This exam, available from grades 8 to 12, enables proficient students in another world language to earn up to four high school credits, contingent upon their performance in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Exams are available in over 70 languages.
Before registering, students should assess their own abilities. They must demonstrate proficiency in all four areas to pass the assessment. While this exam is available annually, the cost is only covered for the first attempt. Please consider whether your student is prepared or would benefit from waiting a year to practice in one of the four areas evaluated by the WLPE. There is no penalty for waiting!
If you're interested in having your student take this exam, please discuss it with them at home and then complete THIS FORM. The exam will be held in the OV library on Tuesday, March 19th. To allow time for preparation, the survey will close on March 6th. Additional information will be provided before the exam day for students who choose to participate.
Feel free to reach out to Wendy Smith on ParentSquare or via email smithwj@mukilteo.wednet.edu with questions.
