Family Message — Sunday, February 25th, 2024
Good afternoon Stanwood Middle School Families!
Empower
This week we are moving our Spartan Spotlight to the top of our family message to introduce a new program and two new staff members to our Spartan Community.
Malissa Boatwright and Stephanie Close (pictured below) are our new Check, Connect, Expect para educators. They are working with students to help find success in the classroom with a system of checking in with an adult everyday about what they need to do for their learning, setting up expectations, routines, and systems to make sure they are finding success in the classroom. They also will work to connect them with the resources they need to find success.
We are very excited about our new program and anticipate adding more students to the program in coming months.
Now, get to know Ms. Malissa and Ms. Close!
Malissa Boatwright (left) started working at Stanwood MS in January, having been working as a paraeducator for one year. She says, :"the students always make my day!
Even on the hardest days, it's still great to invest in them and to see them grow and learn who they are as individuals."
In her short time here she also says, "The teamwork and comradery at SMS make working here so awesome. Everyone cares for each other and all the staff work together."
When she's not at work she likes to read and hang out with friends.
Stephanie Close (right) started working in schools last January and is in her first year of being a teacher. She likes making students laugh and feel excited to learn.
She also says, "The wonderful staff and students make Stanwood MS special. And the location. I love Stanwood!"
When she's not here, she likes to watch movies, read and go on walks.
We are excited for our new program, the staff working with our students, and ways to empower our Spartans even more in their learning.
Got Games?
Our library is looking for donations for card games or other games students could enjoy during their free time. If you have any board games, decks of card (especially UNO), or other such items, please consider bringing them in for our Spartans to use in the library.

Help us fight fentanyl
Please join us for an important community safety forum.
Fentanyl Awareness Night will teach students, families, and the community what you need to know about this danger that’s now laced into most street drugs.
This synthetic opioid is being pressed into fake pills — and it’s 50x more potent than heroin. A lethal dose can be only 2 milligrams.
Local criminals are marketing these pills to our children.
Join us at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, at Stanwood High School to hear from local, state, and federal experts about how to protect yourself and your family. This free community forum is open to everyone.

We will first walk around in the morning to introduce ourselves to every student and make sure we answer questions about lunches, schedules and anything else that will make students comfortable on their first day.
