DCMS Newsletter - Winter Edition
A NEW YEAR!
2022??!! How is that possible?
DCMS Family,
I am extremely grateful for our staff, students, and community for their amazing ability to adapt and adjust to the numerous changes thrown our way these last two years. As I have pointed out in previous editions of this newsletter, flexibility, adaptability, critical thinking/problem solving, collaboration and creativity are increasingly valuable skills in our world and these are life skills we work hard to incorporate into our lessons and activities.
These last two years have taught us so much about education and as educators it reminded us of what really matters - relationships. The pandemic also reminds us that we are more than just teachers - at times we are social workers, nurses, counselors and more. We have flexed and stretched ourselves physically and emotionally in support of our students. Last year we put a tremendous focus on our students well-being and getting them through the unprecedented conditions created by the pandemic. As always, our students and staff have shown their flexibility and resiliency and our staff have simply been amazing in light of all of the new conditions thrown our way.
We have really focused much of our efforts this school year around social skills and attacking the gaps in terms of our students' social, emotional and academic readiness. It’s imperative that we also renew our focus on our own personal wellbeing, especially as educators, and take care of and support each other so we can better support and grow our students - for some, this balance can be difficult.
Thank you for all that you do and for the continued support in our mission. Thank you for entrusting us with the opportunity to guide and develop our students into future ready citizens.
Happy New Year!

DCMS Iowa Assessments (ISASP) - March 2022
“Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.” (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning, 2018)
Celebrations!!
- we expanded our Mental Health Services at DCMS by adding a full time Social Emotional Learning Interventionist? Mrs. Meg Benge has been a great addition to our team!!
- we had very few Office Discipline Referrals at DCMS this 1st Semester?! We have great students and supports & interventions in place including the addition of Mr. David Milder!
- we had ~93% student attendance during 1st Semester? We pride ourselves in having a positive school culture where students feel like they belong and have a voice!
- we had nearly 50% of our parents/guardians participate in P/T Conferences in October? That's the highest rates we've seen at DCMS in over five years!
- 98% of our students received Meeting or Progressing marks for our Citizenship standards??!! That's simply fantastic!

Every Student Succeeds Through MTSS
Davis County Middle School is still considered a "Targeted Status" school from the State of Iowa's Department of Education through the Every Student Succeeds Act. Davis County leadership will continue to assess our instructional effectiveness of what is known as Multi-Tiered Systems of Support or MTSS. What MTSS is, simply, is an acronym that Iowa has adopted to ensure that every single student has access to the appropriate grade level core curriculum and the appropriate supports needed to succeed and grow as a learner in that curriculum.

A Reminder from Penny
If your child is being picked up by anyone other than you, from an after school sporting event that is out of town, they need to bring me a note signed by a notary. All of the building secretaries are notaries and would be happy to do that for you.
Thank you for helping us keep your children safe!
