G5LIFE - What's Happening 10/28/2024
Dear G5 Families,
Learning This Past Week
Language Arts: We continue to read "My Teacher is an Alien" and respond using their writers notebook. We also continued to practice using context clues to find meaning of unknown words, worked on the suffix -ing, and learned about the different word parts, prefix, root words, and suffixes. Please continue to have students read 35 minutes a night and complete their reading log.
Social Studies: Students started a new lesson on The Native Americans and their Cultural Regions.
How did indigenous groups adapt to different environments?
How and why did cultural regions differ?
Math: Students practiced multiplying a unit fraction with a whole number, showing great progress and understanding.
Science: They observed wheat plants grown in both light and dark conditions. This hands-on activity supported our discussions about the vital role of chlorophyll in photosynthesis. Additionally, over the next two weeks students will observe butterfly larvae to investigate how multicellular organisms obtain nutrient.
ELA/Science: Our students are embarking on an exciting research project focused on ecosystems, sparking their curiosity and engagement with the natural world.

Math - Relating Multiplication and Division
This week, our students engaged in a hands-on concrete math activity in order to illustrate the relationship between multiplication and division. Using themselves and hula hoops as groups, they worked together to simulate the following scenario: "There are 24 students. There are 6 groups." They quickly figured out there should be 4 students in each group. This activity not only reinforced their understanding of math concepts but also fostered teamwork and collaboration. The equations representing this situation are:
· 24÷6=4 There are 24 total students. There are 6 groups. There are 4 students in each group.
· 6×4=24 There are 6 groups. There are 4 students in each group. There are 24 total students.
They were then able to apply this knowledge to situations involving fractions and whole numbers.
We are thrilled to see our students actively learning and enjoying math in such a creative way!
Put it into practice: Ask your child to rewrite a division equation into a multiplication equation.
