MS. MOORE - GUIDANCE COUNSELOR
With holidays and school breaks upon us, it’s good to remember the importance of sleep on your child’s growth, development, health, learning, temperament, behavior, etc. We should all practice good sleep hygiene every day (not just on the eve of an important test) and help our children stick to a schedule, go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time, and get good quality sleep in between.
Why Sleep is so Important:
Sleep is linked to brain functions, like thinking, concentration, memory, and productivity.
Sleep affects energy levels which helps us maintain healthy levels of activity.
Sleep helps our bodies regulate blood pressure.
Sleep helps us with social emotional intelligence, especially with recognizing and understanding other people’s feelings and perspectives. We have more empathy for others when we are well rested.
Sleep helps us regulate our emotions - lack of sleep can cause irritability, aggression, frustration, poor judgement, etc.
Getting enough sleep can help us avoid depression.
Sleeps helps the body repair, recover, rejuvenate, and fight infection.
To improve sleep quality, help your child:
Avoid sleeping late when they’ve had enough sleep
Go to bed around the same time each night
Spend more time being more active during the day
Spend more time outside
Reduce stress through exercise, mindfulness (meditating, yoga, etc.), therapy or other means
Remove electronics from their bedrooms. Screens like phones, computers, video games, and TVs give off a light that triggers awake hormones in our brains.
Have a relaxed bedtime routine that includes quiet and calm activities like reading or listening to soft music.
Avoid caffeine! It’s in beverages like tea, coffee, soda, cocoa, energy drinks
Daily Sleep Recommendations:
Newborns: 14-17 hours of sleep
Infants: 12-16 hours of sleep
Toddlers: 11-14 hours of sleep
Preschool: 10-13 hours
School Age: 9-12 hours
Teens: 8-10 hours
Adults 7-9 hours
See your doctor if you:
Have trouble falling asleep at night despite trying these tips.
Wake up through the night or early in the morning and cannot get back to sleep.
Continue to feel like you have no energy despite getting enough sleep.
Are having trouble meeting your responsibilities – such as not being able to go to school, get to work on time, or spend time with your friends.
Have feelings of sadness that don't seem to go away.
Have worried feelings that make it hard to focus on other things.
Often feel sick in other ways (such as headaches, loss of appetite or other symptoms you can't explain).
