We had six families to attend our Parent Engagement Opportunity on November 7th, Tech Talk. Tech Talk highlighted the dangers of social media and the need for parent involvement and awareness of their child's social media presence and usage. Our FCPS Chief of Police, Martin Schafer, guided us through the latest social media apps and ways that kids are keeping their social media presence from their parents.
We also discussed the safeguards you can take to eliminate predators from accessing their children as well as apps to keep you aware of your child's activity online. Here's some interesting Morton data:
- Nine out of ten of school incidents (in school and the bus stop) that lead to a school disruption come from the inappropriate use of technology and/or social media apps.
- Most bullying reports on the Stop Tipline come from post on social media or messaging from telecommunication devices.
Ways to help your child and the school:
- Monitoring your child's social media accounts
- Use monitoring apps like Family Link.
- Know who your child is communicating with online.
- Control your child's passwords
