LISD School Newsletter

A Note from Dr. Martin
Dear LISD Families,
As you know, there is no school on Friday, thanks to some changes we made to the school calendar this year. We came back to school in August five days earlier than recent years, and then added five 3-day weekends to the school schedule. This is the third one of those weekends. The idea is that families will use those opportunities for appointments and weekend getaways, rather than having students miss a day of school.
This year's calendar was the result of a multi-stakeholder collaborative process that involved looking at balanced calendar research, school attendance data, and school calendar models showing a wide variety of ways to distribute our required school days throughout a calendar year.
I've been enjoying these 3-day weekends peppered throughout the school year, just when I could use a little break, and I'm wondering how families are experiencing this school calendar. You'll get an opportunity this spring to provide feedback on our calendar and how well it is working for your family, so watch for a survey.
In the meantime, I sincerely hope our students and staff enjoy the weekend, and I hope everybody comes back to school on Friday night at 5:00 for both boys and girls varsity basketball games, a celebration of our senior athletes, and the dedication of the Coach Berg Weight Room and the M.R. Buffum Gym. Go Lobos!
All my best,
Martha

Spring Sports Are Just Around the Corner
High school Track & Field and high school Golf both start on March 3. All students must have a current sports physical on file in order to practice. Sports physicals must remain current for the entire duration of the season in order the athlete to remain eligible. Middle school Track starts March 24 and students do NOT need a sports physical in order to participate in middle school sports.
Families will receive Parent Square notices regarding completing Risk Management form and Extra Curricular participation form (if a student hasn't participated in a sport this year).
If you have questions about what is needed for your student to participate in spring sports, please contact Ronda Berg in the secondary office.

Senior Profile - Anna Fuller
What clubs/athletics/extracurriculars have you been involved in?
I’ve done soccer and track since 6th grade, and I played basketball in grades 6-9. I was the secretary of ASB my junior year, and I’ve been a member of the 4H club since 6th grade and I’ve done horseback riding since 5th grade. In high school, I’ve been in horse jumping shows and competitions. Oh, and I was in Community Shakespeare in grades 5-9 and I think I did 4 or 5 plays.
What is one positive memory from your time here that you’ll carry with you forever?
I have a lot of positive memories from sports and being supported by such a tight knit community. At track meets and soccer games, we are cheering each other on, and it’s great to work so hard with other people throughout the season.
Finish this sentence: “I cannot live without…….”
Sports! Having goals and structure for my life is super important to me, and I’ve gotten that from sports.
What is one piece of advice you have for incoming high school students?
There can be a lot of pressure in high school, especially how important grades are, but it’s really important to weigh what matters most to you and not get too caught up with other people’s expectations of you. You have to make time for things for the things you love…otherwise, what’s the point?
What is one song that summarizes your graduation from high school?
I really like Now or Never by Kendrick Lamar.
Who/what do you find inspiring?
I’ve always been super inspired by my parents and their dedication and drive. Throughout high school, I have also found Marina, the track coach, to be very positive, strong, and wise. She has inspired me to work hard and keep believing in myself.
What is the most meaningful assignment ever given to you by a teacher?
In our sophomore year, we had to do a play or video recording of a scene from Romeo and Juliet. A few of my friends and I dressed up and did the scene with a twist, and we had so much fun doing it.
What’s the most important quality in a friendship? Why?
I’d say probably honesty, because I believe that trust has to be built on honesty. You have to be truthful and honest with yourself and your friends. That’s what relationships are built on.
In 10 years, I will be…
Hopefully, I’ll be finished with post secondary education and doing something that makes me happy. I’d like to build a life that is balanced and be in a career that I find fulfilling.
What are your plans after high school?
I’m thinking about taking a gap year to do something with horses and then going to college, likely somewhere in Canada. I’m looking at UBC but we’ll see, and I definitely want sports to continue to be part of my life.
