Veterans Day
We are excited to continue the tradition of hosting a Veterans Day assembly again this year. The student assembly will be held on Monday, November 11 at 9:40AM. This is an important time for us to honor those who have served and those currently serving our country in the armed forces. Veterans Day provides the opportunity to talk with your child(ren) about the Veterans in your family, such as grandparents, aunts, uncles or family friends.
Students are encouraged to wear red, white and blue clothing on Veterans Day. In the past, some of our Scouts have worn their uniforms to school.
We are inviting Veterans and those who are currently serving in the armed forces to be our honored guests at the Veterans Day Assembly. This might include parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles or special friends. Veterans and military members should plan to arrive at school by 9:30AM, enter the school through door #2, proceed to the gym and sit in the reserved seating section. Due to space constraints in the gym, we will not be able to accommodate parents/guardians who are not veterans, service members or their immediate family members. We are working on a plan to stream the program on the McKinley Facebook page.
Students will receive a name badge today and can write the name of a Veteran or current military member they wish to honor on that sticker. They should wear their special badge to school on Monday.
Kindness Poster Contest Winners
Congratulations to McKinley's Kindness Poster Contest Winners! The theme this year is; Kindness Takes All of Us. One winning poster was selected from each grade level and those posters were submitted to the district contest. District winners will be recognized at a future School Board meeting. Winning posters will be posted on the district website and printed for use in schools throughout the district.
A Message from Mrs. Ness-Manary
We are so grateful!!!
This month our Bulldogs will be learning all about GRATITUDE. Gratitude means choosing to notice and appreciate things in our life, things in others and things in the world. As you have time together as a family, try out a gratitude question! Here are a few to get you started:
- What gets in the way of us showing Gratitude to others?
- How can we help each other remember to show Gratitude?
- What has made you laugh lately that you are Grateful for?
- What is a strength you have that you are Grateful for?
This month, we will have two hat days at McKinley! Friday, November 8 and Friday, November 15. We ask that our Bulldogs bring in $1 (each Friday) to wear a hat for the day. All money raised will go to help McKinley families who may need some help with their holiday meals.
We are looking for families and groups who are interested in sponsoring McKinley families for the holidays. Please reach out to me to talk about what this could look like for you! Jessica Ness-Manary, 763-506-3479, jessica.nessmanary@ahschools.us
Looking ahead, we will be hosting The Great McKinley Coin Collection from Monday, December 2 through Friday, December 6. Students are encouraged to bring in their coins and cash to help benefit the Christmas Committee for Anoka County. All money raised is donated to the Christmas Committee to be used to purchase food for families within Northern Anoka County. Start saving those coins!!! The grade level who raises the most money will earn a popcorn party!!

Kindergarten
Our talented kindergartners are doing a great job learning lines. We are just finishing our Line Monsters and our artists have loved making them. We used two different mediums for this project, oil pastels and watercolor paints. We are starting our Lion Lines project where our focus will be drawing lines on their own and will continue practicing our cutting skills. The growth is so fun to watch in the art room.
First Grade
Our first grade artists have started their self portraits. I love this project because they all look so different and they capture themselves so well. Our focus is still on the Elements of Art, lines and shapes. We use both to showcase their drawing skills. We will also design and paint a background to place our portraits on. These will be hanging in your house for years to come!
Second Grade
Texture is still our focus this month with our second grade artists. We are making Texture Monsters and they are adorable. They’ve really enjoyed learning how they can make something look real by just using different types of lines and patterns to create implied texture. Ask them to find implied texture in your home. They are experts!
Third Grade
We are continuing to learn about the Elements of Art with our third grade artists. We are incorporating these elements into our Pop Art Sandwich project. They get to build a delicious drawing using layering, different mediums and incorporating their favorite foods. This art lesson is really fun and packed with flavor!
Fourth Grade
This month we are starting our 3D food trucks and continuing with the concept of how art communicates. Our artists get to design and create their own food truck with intricate details and multiple mediums. Ask your artist what kind of food truck they are revving up to create!
Fifth Grade
Our fifth grade artists are continuing with Realism this month. We will be learning about the artist, Jim Dime, and create a piece of artwork inspired by his work. He is best known for painting everyday objects. Our artists will be drawing paintbrushes and using mixed mediums to create a beautiful masterpiece.
Explorations News - Mrs. Marano
Kindergarten
Kindergarteners are learning about what animals need to survive. What is your child’s favorite animal? Ask them what that animal needs to live. Students would be excited to search out information with you about what their favorite animal loves to eat! Soon, we will be investigating different ecosystems and talking about how animals get what they need from the environment they live in. What animals live near you? Ask your child what they think: What do these animals eat and where do they get water?
First Grade
First graders are so excited to bring their model seeds home and share them with you! This is their second “exhibit” in the Museum of Leafology! Students have made two pretend “seeds” that disperse by the wind. I am encouraging them to demonstrate their “flying seeds” for their families, and tell why plants need to spread their seeds far away from the parent plants. Up next, we will be learning about some really cool plant features, and how plants have inspired human inventions!
Second Grade
Second grade students are in the middle of a building project with craft sticks. The engineers were challenged to build a tower that can stand up to the wind of a fan, and hold the weight of our science books! Ask your student what they learned about building a strong structure. Next, we will be learning about how the properties of materials can change.
Third Grade
Third grade students are in a unit on forces and motion. We have just investigated how the direction of a force affects the direction an object moves. Ask your child about the ball and track investigation–it was fun! We will continue to investigate the relationship between force and motion. What happens when you use a lot of force on an object? Or just a little? What forces are involved in an object just standing still? Ask your child what types of forces are involved in activities they enjoy!
PTO News
Please join us for our next meeting Monday, November 11, at 6:30pm in the Library. We will be discussing our upcoming event, North Pole Treasures, and review previous events from this Fall. Our Booster Fundraiser provided our school with just over $52,000 which will be used to purchase Chromebooks and iPads. We are so thankful again to our families for your generous donations to our McKinley Bulldogs.

Winter Weather Reminders
Minnesota weather is shifting gears, and the Anoka-Hennepin School District has plans in place for when extreme winter weather arrives.
The safety of all students is the first priority when determining if schools should stay open in adverse weather. If a determination is made to close school due to extreme winter weather, the district will alert families in a variety of ways, including:
Text and email message from #AHSchools. (For parents/guardians only.)
District and school websites.
District and school social media pages (e.g. Facebook, Instagram and Twitter).
Media outlets including WCCO, KSTP, FOX 9, KARE 11, CCX Media, WCCO radio and Star Tribune newspaper.
Those responsible for activities scheduled in schools over the weekend will determine if adverse weather conditions necessitate a cancellation.
Read more about the district’s policies on extreme winter weather at ahschools.us/weather.
Social Emotional Learning/Parent-Teacher Communication: Parent/Guardian Survey
The district is collecting feedback from parents/guardians through a survey on two topics. The first part of the survey relates to your perceptions on social emotional learning and the second part is in regards to parent-teacher communication. The anonymous survey should take 5-10 minutes to complete. You can access the survey using the link below through Friday, November 15th. Your insight is very valuable and will be used to inform decisions across the district. Thank you in advance for your time.
