Message from Principal Alvarez
Happy Sunday Afternoon, Powell Families!
- Thank you to everyone who joined us for our PTA Stay Strong Pep Rally and Student-Led Conferences on Tuesday. Despite the unpleasant weather, your presence meant so much to us. We truly appreciate your time and support, and we look forward to bringing even more exciting family engagement events to our Powell community.
- A big thank you as well to all the Powell families who participated in our PTA Popcorn Fundraiser! Your continued support helps make these fundraisers a success each year. We have extended the fundraiser deadline to Tuesday, February 18—if you still have fundraiser money to turn in, please drop it off at the front office or with your child’s teacher.
- We also loved seeing so many Powell Moms and mother figures at our Muffins with Moms event! It’s always a joy to have you on campus, sharing special moments with our Thunderbirds.
The past few weeks have been busy, and we are grateful for the involvement and enthusiasm of our Powell families. Thank you for your ongoing support—it makes all the difference!
Wishing you a wonderful week ahead!
Mr. Alvarez
Proud Principal of Powell Elementary

FEBRUARY 2025: Counselor Message
24- 25 District Attendance Policy
Powell's Attendance Goal- 93.2%
If any of our Thunderbirds need a coat/jacket or any type of winter clothing, please let us know by contacting their teacher or our counselors, Priscilla.Perez@nisd.net or patricia.caro-rebon@nisd.net or CIS, cis055@nisd.net- Mrs. Sabrina Guerra or Mrs. Trejo - Alejandra.Trejo@nisd.net. It's going to get really cold this up coming week so let us know if you need help with winter clothing.
Monthly Perfect Attendance Incentive
We have had great success with our Monthly Perfect Attendance Incentive. For the month of December, we had 231 students participate with Donuts & Extra Recess. For our Perfect Attendance Incentive for January, we will have Takis/Flamin Hot Cheetos & Extra Recess.
Just a reminder, a student who has Perfect Attendance has the following:
- No Absences
- 2 or less Tardies
- 2 or less Early Outs
CONTINUE TO SUPPORT: Please help us if your child should be absent from school
- If a student is absent, please message the teacher that day.
- Please send in doctor’s notes or any other documentation when the student returns to school.
- A phone call will not provide excuse for an absence- it needs to be a note.
- Family trips are not excused.
- Students who arrive after 9:00 are absent.
- If a student arrives after 9:00, but has a doctor’s note for that day, they will not be counted absent. (Health)
- Students who arrive after 7:45 am, will be counted as tardy.
- Warning notices are a part of the student’s permanent record.
- If a student accumulates 10 or more unexcused absences in a 6-month period they can be referred to the Municipal Court for Mediation.
We value your support and relationship by having your child at school. Every day makes a positive difference academically and social emotionally.

Safety and Security (UPDATED)
As we continue to actively monitor our campus safety and security plan, we will continue to ask all of our parents to come through the front office after 7:40 am. Starting in the new year, we will not allow parents to take their child to their classroom after 7:40 am. We have been having challenges with ensuring our campus is secure when gates have have been left open after 7:40 am. We will no longer allow parents to drop off their child at their class after 7:40 am. Our campus buildings, (Pods), are locked after 8 am.
If you should come for lunch, we will be asking you to check in at the front office so please ensure you bring your ID (Driver's License or a valid picture ID) in order to get a visitor's badge. We will also need your help with leaving your ID with the front office so you can access a "badge reader" to enter the cafeteria. When you return back to the front office and return the "badge reader", we will return your ID. We appreciate your understanding and support in making sure our campus is safe and secure.
