Dear Parents,
As we approach the end of another incredible school year, I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation for your support, dedication, and partnership throughout this school year. Thank you for prioritizing academics and for your continued involvement in your child's education. We couldn't do it without you!
The week of May 6th is a special week that we have dedicated to recognizing and acknowledging the incredible efforts of our Warrior staff who have gone above and beyond to create engaging and meaningful learning experiences each and everyday! I have included some ideas to express appreciation throughout he week of May 6th to our staff. Thank you for your help recognizing all they do for our school community.
Field Day will be held on May 22nd. This event is for students only. Due to safety reasons, visitors will not be permitted to attend.
We look forward to celebrating our students during our end of year award ceremonies. Please see below for the dates and times.
As we approach the summer break, I encourage you to take time to enjoy your family and make great memories. As we know, these years go by too fast. Let's celebrate the accomplishments of this past year and look forward to new opportunities and adventures in the upcoming school year.

This last nine weeks we will be working on speaking, listening, and writing with a purpose. Students will continue to compose a variety of texts, to include lists, informational books, letters to friends, recipes, and writing words found in the classroom. In science we will learn about organisms in their environment. In math we will be working on measurement and comparison using nonstandard units. In Social Studies we will be noticing the world as citizens. Important reminders. Please send snack with your student daily. Fashion show vests need to be returned by May 6th. Please keep a look out for end of the year party information. Thank you for all of your support. We are almost through a fantastic year!
Hello Kindergarten Families,
We are on the final stretch of the school year! It certainly has been an awesome year and we have thoroughly enjoyed working with each one of your students! Here is a sneak peak of the remainder of the school year:
Reading- We will be wrapping up our unit where students were exploring characteristics of persuasive texts and stating what the author is trying to persuade the reader to think or do. For the remainder of the year, students will review what they have learned throughout the year and reflect on all the different texts they have listened to or read. Students highlight what they have learned about comprehension, genre, and author’s purpose and craft through a book talk of one of their favorite texts. Students will also be introduced to making connections between text and society.
Writing- Students will finish using the writing process to write about topics in which they feel strongly. Students will compose drafts to explain their reasons for liking or not like a particular topic. We will then move into our last unit in which students engage in the writing process to compose personal narratives that describe their favorite experience/event from the school year. Students will edit their drafts for complete sentences, spelling, and previously learned conventions.
Math- We will finish our unit on numeracy and building a strong foundational understanding of the mathematical relationships that exist within numbers. In our last unit, students are introduced to the concept of income. They identify ways to earn income at home and in the community. Students understand that money can be earned as income or received as a gift. We will explore and list simple skills required for jobs for both children and adults. They will also distinguish between wants and needs and identify income as a source to meet ones wants and needs.
Science- In science student will observe changes that are part of a simple life cycle of a plant: seed, seedling, plant, flower, and fruit. Students also identify ways that young plants resemble the parent plant.
Social Studies – Students learn about how individuals have basic wants and needs, as well as about how people work jobs to meet their wants and needs. They will learn about the role of technology in jobs.
Kindergarten teachers would like to thank you for all that you have done to help us help your kiddos this year. We could not have done it without you! Don’t forget to keep them learning during the summer. Have them continue to read, write, and work on basic addition and subtraction. Have a wonderful summer!
Hello Families!
It’s May and the end of the year is fast approaching. What an amazing year it has already been, but we are still hard at work! We cannot wait to see how much more the students will grow.
In Reading and Writing, we are working on the characteristics of persuasive writing and letter writing. Also, we will discuss recognizing and analyzing genre-specific characteristics, structures, and author’s purpose within the text.
In Math, we will continue working on solving word problems using concrete/ pictorial models and number sentences.
In Social Studies, we will discuss basic needs, goods and services, and how various jobs assist with production of goods and services.
In Science, students will learn about life cycles. We have introduced life cycles with our research unit, but we will go more in-depth with this unit and study the life cycle of a frog, fish, and chicken.

It has been a great school year, and we are at the final stretch. Please encourage your kiddos to keep pushing through to the end. It will be here before we know it.
· In Math, we are finishing up contextual multiplication and division and we will end the school year working on financial literacy.
· In Language Arts, we will be reading, writing, and examining the characteristics of persuasive text. We will end the year focusing on the following essential questions.
o How do I determine the key ideas of a text? Why is it important?
o How can I construct a response that clearly demonstrates my understanding?
o How do my experiences and knowledge influence my reading and understanding?
· In Science, we will continue to explore living things, and life cycles to include butterflies, grasshoppers, and beetles.
· In Social Studies, we will be celebrating our cultural heritage as it applies to our own culture and Texas culture. Remember your child can access “Studies Weekly” online at home through Clever.
Thank you for all your support this year. The students have worked so hard and come so far. We are all very proud of their successes and growth they have shown this year! We are finishing up the year with MAP testing, research in Reading and Writing, and reviewing some difficult math skills.
Hello Parents,
As the school year is winding down, our students are still engaged in learning. We love seeing the growth, work ethic, and commitment to learning shown by each of our awesome fourth graders.
As we wrap up this school year, in science we are learning about animals and their habitats. Students are showcasing their learning through PowerPoint presentations and research papers. In social students we are learning about Texas heritage, holidays, and being a good citizen.
There is still lots of learning to do. Thank you for your continued support and have a wonderful summer.

These next few weeks of school we will be continuing research projects and reviewing skills that have become part of our daily practice and continuing to make memories with STEM day, field day, and our end of the year celebrations.
It is hard to believe that we are almost of the end of the year, and that we can see summer on the horizon. Thank you for sharing your children with us, it has been an incredible year.
Happy Last month of School!!! Please remember to send your student in appropriate footwear for PE each day. We have an exciting month in May. We will be outdoor playing Kickball and training for our annual Field Day activities. Due to space and safety, field day is reserved only for our students. Please be sure you send your child to school already sun screened and with their water. We will distribute the field day shirts when they arrive to campus.

As the school year is winding down, our wonderful Maude Moore Wood Warrior students are hard at work in the music classroom. From learning about the important roots of our musical heritage to figuring out how to play rhythm sticks, each student is experiencing the musical world at its fullest. Our intermediate students are incorporating body percussion and non-pitched instruments into songs that they are composing on their own. Additionally, they are learning and performing call and response songs and experiencing American musical heritage through the study of blues and jazz. Our younger students are continuing on the path to mastering steady beat and learning seasonal songs. A big shout out to our fourth and fifth grade Warrior Voices Choir students who have prepared extensively for an awe-inspiring performance scheduled for May 9, 2024 at 4:30pm in our cafeteria. Don’t miss it!! It has been a wonderful privilege to share to the joy of music with your children here at Maude Moore Wood this year.

May’s character trait of the month is Self-Control. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines self-control as “restraint exercised over one’s own impulses, emotions, or desires.” Killeen ISD describes this character trait as “Being able to manage emotions in difficult situations.”
With that said, we here at Maude Moore Wood Elementary School try to teach and model this trait daily for our students. According to Edutopia, “The first five years of life are a period of significant brain development, but some regions of the brain mature more slowly than others. The prefrontal cortex, which is the home base of executive function, is one such region, which explains why impulse and emotional control can be difficult for young children,” (https://www.edutopia.org/article/simple-ways-to-help-young-kids-develop-self-control-donna-wilson-marcus-conyers/). This article gives great ideas for helping our younger children learn self-control. • Read books about self-control.
• Provide real-life scenarios for children to “stop and think” through, so they can practice self-control and be prepared in different situations.
• Practice mindful breathing.
• Have them write in a journal.
