Principal's Message
Dear Families and Students,
This week OSHS completed our Red Ribbon Week in order bring awareness to student wellness and raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I'm proud to announce OSHS raised over $1,000 to support this great cause! Thank you to all our students and families who donated.
I would like to thank our amazing PVO parents who donated to our staff Thanksgiving luncheon. The food was delicious and we all enjoyed sharing a meal together before the upcoming break!
Congratulations to our OSHS fencing team, they had their best ever tournament last weekend at Florida State University. See the results and photos below.
Last Saturday was our first ever OSS High School Homecoming Dance! The evening went well and the students enjoyed themselves! Thank you to the Bacchus, Canatay, Cortese, DeJesus, Dorman, Halabi, Mallonee, Mayo, Perez, Presaud-Vincent and Varley families for making the event so special and inviting.
Today some students enjoyed the first Free Reading Friday Café of the year. Select students can earn a trip to the Media Center one Friday per month where they come to relax, play games and snack during their English class. This is a positive reward in place for our students of the month, students earning commendation points and students nominated by their teacher for demonstrating ORCAS character traits. See photos of the event below.
Have a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. All OSS schools are closed Monday, November 19th-23rd. We will see you back on Monday, November 26th.
Respectfully,
Abdulaziz Yalcin, M.Ed

OSS mu alpha theta hosts Orange County math tournament
ORANGE COUNTY MATH TOURNAMENT (OCMT)
The Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society of Orlando Science High School invites all 4th and 5th grade Orange County students to compete at the Orange County Math Tournament (OCMT) to be held on Saturday, December 8th, 2018.
Registration is now open! If you would like to register your student for this year's Invitational, visit the Registration page and fill out the form with your student's information. Registration will be available until Monday, December 3rd, 2018.
Registration must be completed online no later than Monday, December 3rd, 2018. Registration fee is $15 for each student and should be paid online via School Pay. The competition is open to first 250 students who applied.
Competition will take place at Orlando Science Elementary School campus which is located at 2601 Technology Drive, Orlando FL 32804.
We encourage all schools to participate, regardless of whether they currently have math teams or not. In Competition Math, any topics can and do arise. There are no guidelines or hints about how to solve the problems, so it truly is an opportunity to express and develop individual creativity and problem solving skills. However, in order to prepare your students, you may look at the past years’ questions.
We hope you will find this competition a rewarding mathematical experience for your students, and we look forward to your participation at our Invitational on December 8th.
If you have any questions, please contact us at ossmualphatheta@gmail.com

Bright Futures Scholarship
State of Florida has its own scholarship program called Bright Futures and it is managed through OSFA (Office of Student Financial Assistance). When you complete the application, you are also being evaluated for other scholarships through State of Florida. It is a very short application and should not take more than 15 minutes. Most important thing to know is that, you only complete the form and your transcript and SAT/ACT scores will be submitted automatically through OSS and the State of Florida University System. You are not required to satisfy all the application requirements until the end of the school year to apply to this scholarship. On the other hand, being qualified currently does not guarantee that you will receive this scholarship. If your end of year GPA falls under the requirement, then you will not be receiving the scholarship. Here are the current requirements:

The Orlando Science High School on Technology Drive opened its doors to a newly renovated campus in August 2018. One of the great features of the High School campus is the brand new Media Center. It serves as a space where all students can read, research and study. Please consider making a donation directly to the Media Center to help Mrs. Singleton stock the shelves and create a welcoming environment for our students.

ORCAS Core value: Outreach
Here at OSHS character education is an important component of educating the whole student. Our program, ORCAS Core Values, spotlights 5 specific character traits that we focus on as a school. The "O" in ORCAS is Outreach which focuses on a student's ability to improve his/her community. Students complete community service hours for scholarships and club requirements and we want to make sure they see a connection between their service and affecting others in a positive way. Parents and families can use this program and language to continue these conversations outside of school as well. OSHS ORCAS are students of character!
