The official digital newsletter of La Porte ISD
Greetings, La Porte ISD Family. Today is a great day to be a Bulldog!
Can you believe that Monday marks the 100th day in school? There have been so many great things happening in La Porte ISD, and this year is truly flying by.
This past week, which wrapped up last night with the final performance of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella, is just one example of the stellar year we are experiencing. If you had the opportunity to see La Porte High School's musical, you were undoubtedly impressed with the amazing talent and dedication of the cast, crew and many volunteers. I also hope you were among the hundreds of family members who attended The district's Rodeo Art Show at James H. Baker Sixth Grade Campus this past week, where there were dozens upon dozens of student masterpieces on display. Whether it's on the stage, in the orchestra pit or in the art studio, La Porte is home to some very talented students, outstanding teachers and wonderfully supportive parents.
I want to turn your attention to some important academic planning events that are coming up, the first of which is tomorrow, February 5, for Lomax Jr. High eighth grade students and parents. This is an opportunity for you to visit with counselors and learn more about course selection for next school year. (Yes, we are already planning for 2024-25!) If you are the parent of a 10th grade student, mark your calendar for February 15 at 6:30 p.m., when our instructional and counseling teams will host an informative Dual Enrollment meeting at La Porte High School. This is where you will find answers to your questions about our partnership with San Jacinto College and the dual credit college classes offered through our program. In addition, our innovative Maritime Program, in partnership with San Jacinto College, also offers dual credit courses and career opportunities. On February 21 from 6-7 p.m., San Jacinto College and our CTE Department are offering a Maritime Information Session via Zoom. Register here.
After a bye this past Friday night, our Bulldogs and Lady Dawgs are back in action on Tuesday as they are battling for playoff berths. We have several other teams in action this week, including baseball, soccer and our swimming/diving team, which will be competing in the UIL Regionals this Saturday. Good luck to all our student-athletes! More information and game tickets are available on the La Porte ISD Athletics Website.

UIL realignment places La Porte in 11-5A and 20-5A for next two years
La Porte High School will compete in Districts 11-5A and 20-5A beginning the 2024-25 school year, according to realignment information released Feb. 1 by the University Interscholastic League. The football team will be a member of 11-5A, while basketball and volleyball teams are assigned to 20-5A.
Bulldogs Day in La Porte!
Jan 31 was District 8-5A Champions Bulldogs Day in La Porte! Mayor Louis R. Rigby issued the proclamation at the La Porte High School field house in the presence of Bulldogs coaches and players. This past season was stellar for the Bulldogs, who won their first district championship since 2016 and advanced to the UIL playoffs for the first time since 2017. What’s even more impressive is that they accomplished these feats while playing their home games at Barbers Hill Eagle Stadium as construction of a new Bulldog Stadium commenced. The mayoral proclamation also acknowledges Coach Kevin Berneathy, who was named the 8-5A Coach of the Year and a Houston Texans Coach of the Week, and Assistant Keith Whitely, who earned Dave Campbell’s Football Offensive Coordinator of the Week during the season.
The Harlem Wizards arrive in less than a month!
Get your tickets now for the La Porte Education Foundation’s Hoops Classic. The event is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 23 at Bulldog Centre. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The action is set to get underway at 6:30. More information and tickets are available here.

Construction continues at the site of the new Bulldog Stadium. The framing of the press box can be seen on the right side of this photo. Also, notice the shape of the stadium with the wall that reaches the surface of the press box (closer to the center of the photo). Though weather and supply chain issues continue to affect most construction sites in our region, we are still within the 18-24-month Bulldog Stadium construction timeframe that we outlined to the community when the project began.

OxyChem donates $50K for energy saving upgrades
La Porte ISD on Friday received a $50,000 donation from OxyChem to go toward energy saving upgrades at The Academy of Viola DeWalt High School. OxyChem worked with Texas A&M University to conduct an energy audit at the campus to help La Porte ISD save money on energy costs and lower energy usage. The district will use the donation to install LED lighting and a building automation system, which will allow for scheduled lighting and HVAC operation. La Porte ISD is thankful to OxyChem, one of our Parters in Education, for its generosity.
