Literacy Coach Corner: From Sarah Valter
- First of all, please take a moment to go in and look at some of the preliminary data. We have SO MANY things to celebrate since the beginning of the year, and the growth many of our students have made is amazing!
- Please share with teachers (and reading specialists): Spring screening results will be shared with families electronically around the same time that report cards are sent out. Spreadsheets do not need to be filled out (except Words Their Way in grades 2 and 3). We will also be sharing with families some tips for supporting readers at home during the summer and a breakdown of the spring benchmarks for each grade level. Classroom teachers should go into FastBridge before the end of the year to review students' scores. If there is information that teachers need to share with parents about the screening, this should be included in the report card comment.
- Training Information: We will need to provide FastBridge training to new teachers or those who are moving to grades K/1 or 2/3. Training dates are active in MyLearningPlan now (July 29th with Jill, July 31st with me). Please communicate this with new teachers, moving teachers, and new LTAs during the summer.
Summer Professional Learning
- There are several literacy offerings for teachers throughout the beginning part of June and later part of July. Please encourage your teachers (and coaches) to sign up! You're also welcome to attend any and all sessions!
- I will be reaching out individually to teachers who are returning to classrooms to help them navigate which learning sessions will support them most in the fall.
Looking Ahead...
- In the fall, teachers should have access to their incoming students' BAS protocols. These will eventually be returned to the reading specialists for storage (unless you prefer otherwise), but teachers will be using them for instructional planning.
- Please start thinking of dates in early September when I can come and meet with PLCs in grades 2-5 in learning labs to analyze BAS information and begin using this information to plan for teaching.
- I would like to train first grade teachers to give the BAS in late August/very early September. It will be a half day pull out model like we used this spring, and they will then be able to assess their own incoming students (above the levels considered for reading intervention).
Have a great last week of school!
Thank You!
Special thanks to Beth and Bill for a wonderful FUN DAY!
