Principal's Message
Dear CompSci Middle Community,
We did it! We made it to Friday afternoon. We had a hectic week here at school, but for all the right reasons. The kids have been working very hard to finish things up before break. This week I saw lots of great writing, which is great. From 6th graders writing about the experiences of women of color and NASA in the 1960’s to 8th graders writing argumentative essays about why spring break should come early, the kids are using the skills they have been taught. This time of year is great for that reason, as we get to see the fruits of the teacher’s labors.
This week we also had some interesting field trip experiences. A selection of students across all grades attended the STEM Fair at Pratt and Whitney. This is something we attend every year, as it helps kids to connect what they are learning to the real world. Our 8th graders also had a trip this week. They did a tour of Trinity College in Hartford and then visited the State Capitol. We like to make sure our kids see college as an option and the Capitol visit is a wonderful resource right in our area. The kids were very well behaved on these trips.
As promised, this week’s newsletter contains dates and times of upcoming events here at school. When I was putting it together I did wonder how it is possible to fit this all in! It is not 100% complete, as things are still being added, but what is on there is accurate. If it is a trip you will be able to access the permission slips through Powerschool. The team leader will let you know, so make sure you check their newsletter pages down below.
I hope you all have a wonderful spring break and enjoy the time with your children. We certainly enjoy our time with them, and will do so even more after getting a week to rest up!
Be well,
Jill Wnuk Wojtyna
Principal
END OF YEAR ACTIVITIES
As some of you may know, we hatched and have been raising North Atlantic Salmon in our school this year. The time has come for us to release them out into the wild. We will be letting the babies go in the Salmon River on the Colchester/East Hampton line on Saturday, April 26th. I would love for our students and their families to join us at 10:00 a.m. at the Salmon River Picnic area site. Other activities will be water testing, taking temperature and have nets available to see if there are any water insects that fish may have available to eat as a food source. For additional information please contact Eva Doll at edoll@crec.org or Rose Valle at rvalle@crec.org.

CREC’s Statement of Diversity and Inclusion
“Capitol Region Education Council (CREC) is an intentionally diverse social justice organization whose members work to acknowledge, respect, and empathize with people of all different identifiers, such as race, socioeconomic status, gender identity and expression, education, age, ability, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, language, nationality, and religion. In accordance with CREC’s mission of equity, excellence, and success for all through high-quality educational services, our staff and students commit to participate in and support ongoing equity and inclusion programming through curricular and co-curricular offerings, professional learning, and local and national partnerships. Moreover, CREC staff and students strive to understand and confront the symptoms and causes of systematic oppression—ranging from implicit biases to micro aggressions to discriminatory policies, practices and traditions—that benefit privileged groups. While at CREC, staff and students commit to affirm and honor the lived experiences of others, to willingly challenge inherited beliefs and ideologies, and consequently learn, grow, and serve.”
