Congratulations to our BLHS, SHS Daffodil Princesses
Congratulations to this year’s Bonney Lake and Sumner high school Daffodil Princesses! They will represent our District and serve among other daffodil royalty from other Pierce County high schools. Princesses are selected from their high schools based on their status as demonstrated representatives of leadership and academic success. Throughout the year, the Daffodil Princesses reach out to the community through service, public appearances, and ambassadorship, beyond being a highlight of the Daffodil Parade each spring.
Mark your calendars for the 92nd Annual Daffodil Festival Grand Floral Parade on April 5.
Amelia Vahle (SHS)
Amelia Vahle is an honor society member and is involved in Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Club, FFA, and Jazz Band. She is also the treasurer of Band Leadership Council and is a section leader of the drumline. Amelia is a partial IB student. After high school, Amelia plans to go to college to study chemistry, which is her favorite subject. She plans to pursue a career in forensic science. In her free time, Amelia attends church and she enjoys gardening and reading. She also loves anything that involves arts and crafts. One of Amelia’s most embarrassing moments was during the National Honor Society Induction. She had just poured the sand and was walking to stand on the risers and she tripped on the first step and it made a very loud sound. She is thankful she can laugh about it now!
Brooke Musial (BLHS)
Brooke Musial has been a Bonney Lake High School bowling team member since its establishment in 2023 and a three-year member of the volleyball team. She is involved in many high school clubs and activities, including Choir, Speak Up, DECA, Panther Crue, and National Honor Society. She has maintained a 3.8 GPA while participating in numerous extracurricular activities and studying AP subjects. Her goals include being a role model for those around her as well as spreading kindness. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends and participating in Girl Scouts. A fun fact about Brooke is that she is entering her 13th, and final, year of Girl Scouts after being a member since kindergarten. Brooke intends to continue her education at a university-level school and then continue to medical school to become a psychiatrist.
School Resource Officers: Keeping schools safe and building relationships
Did you know that SBLSD has two uniformed law enforcement School Resource Officers (SROs) for schools within the Sumner and Bonney Lake city limits? Officer Brandon Anderson (Sumner Police Department) and Officer Michael Gould (Bonney Lake Police Department) are a welcomed part of our school communities, helping build and maintain relationships with police, students, families and staff. Learn more about them below!
Officer Brandon Anderson, Sumner Police Department
How long have you been with your police department?
I have been with the Sumner Police Department for five years, and prior to policing I worked in corrections for seven years and was an instructor at the police academy for two years.
We know that being an SRO is more than just physical safety — you are also building very important relationships with our students. What does it mean to you to build these relationships and how does it benefit our schools and community?
For me, building meaningful relationships as an SRO is crucial to the safety, support and well-being of both students and the community. As a public servant, I have always believed relationships to be equally important as operations. While physical safety is always a top priority, fostering trust and building connections with our valued youth brings a deeper level of security. I feel that building these relationships is about creating an environment where students feel valued, heard, and supported. It goes far beyond enforcing rules — it's about understanding the individual needs of students and serving as a positive influence in their lives.
What's a fun fact about you?
I have an uncontrollable weakness for sweets (massive sweet tooth) and two of my favorite candies are orange slices and circus peanuts … Does anyone have any donuts?
Michael Gould, Bonney Lake Police Department
How long have you been with your police department?
I have been with the Bonney Lake Police Department since March of 2022 and previously served with the King County Sheriff's Office for four and a half years.
We know that being an SRO is more than just physical safety — you are also building very important relationships with our students. What does it mean to you to build these relationships and how does it benefit our schools and community?
SROs can have a large impact on how students view and interact with law enforcement professionals, presently and in the future. Building positive relationships is paramount during the K-12 ages and it’s an honor to be a part of that process. I have worked closely with all the schools in the City of Bonney Lake and have thoroughly enjoyed the relationships built with students, staff, and parents. Collaborating with the police department and school district has always served to be beneficial in keeping our schools safe and a fun place to be.
What's a fun fact about you?
I grew up in Bonney Lake and attended Bonney Lake Elementary, Lakeridge Middle School, and Bonney Lake High School (Class of 2012)!
In addition to our two SROs, there are three Campus Safety Officers (CSOs) at each high school and one at each middle school. These district employees maintain order and discipline in our schools, build relationships and connections with our students, help school administrators investigate violations of school rules and policies, provide student-to-student mediation support, and serve pivotal roles in emergency response. Bullying prevention resources
October is Bullying Prevention Month, which provides an opportunity for families, schools and communities to talk about the best ways to prevent bullying. Bullying can take many different forms, and can have long-term effects on students who experience, engage or even witness it.
The Sumner-Bonney Lake School District is committed to a safe and civil educational environment for all students, employees, parents/guardians, volunteers, and patrons that is free from harassment, intimidation, or bullying. We encourage anyone to report a concern through our anonymous school safety tip line with the code 1251: online, email or call/text (253) 693-3729.
Read more about how the district manages Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying and how families/students can report possible instances.
Our school counselors are meeting with students regarding how to recognize, report and respond as a positive bystander or upstander. Captain Compassion, a superhero created by Committee for Children, is a comic series used at the elementary level to help empower families and students to learn how they can stand up against bullying.
