MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Steindorf Families,
What a glorious day it was to be a kindergartener! Today, our kindergarten scholars presented their community helper projects. Students shared their knowledge in full attire representing their chosen community helpers with pride and enthusiasm. We had firefighters, doctors, pilots, cleaners, parents, an electrical engineer, a marine biologist, even a geologist and a paleontologist. We also had a postal worker, classroom buddies, and of course so many of our parents and guardians! Monday, we will have a visit from Board of Trustee President and former fire chief (Station 9) Jared Middleton and our local firefighters.
In light of recent reports of threats to school campuses across the United States, I would like to take this moment to remind parents and guardians of the following:
All adults need to exit our campus by 8:30. If your child arrives after 8:30, they need to pick up a tardy slip through the front office. They will then be able to walk onto campus into their classroom. If your child requires a staff member to walk them to kindergarten, the front office staff will support them.
We continue to welcome volunteers on campus however, you must check in through the front office and obtain a visitor badge. Head to your volunteer location and then exit our campus by checking out through the front office immediately after your volunteer session is complete. Please do not visit other classrooms or staff members.
If your child requires over-the-counter medication, prescription medications, eye drops, etc., you will be able to administer those medications in the front office rather than in the classroom.
Parents are welcome to attend Thursday assembly, but in order for us to return to academic instruction as quickly as possible, parents should not disrupt the flow of students as they enter the amphitheater nor as they return to class. We also need parents to exit campus immediately after the assembly conclusion through the double gates.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
In community,
Dr. Lee
"Diversity is not about how we differ. Diversity is about embracing one another's uniqueness."

Lunch Drop Offs
Steindorf Parents,
We have noticed a significant increase in lunch drop-offs which is adversely impacting our ability to focus on student safety and maintaining an uninterrupted learning environment on campus. While we understand that accidents happen and students may forget their lunch once in a while, we need to limit the number of disruptions to our office and our students learning. Please follow these best practices to help us in this effort:
- Please do your best to send lunches in the morning.
- If forgotten, drop lunches BEFORE lunchtime has started. If lunchtime has started and a student does not have lunch, they will be directed to the cafeteria for a free lunch. Here is the bell schedule.
- Please communicate with your student in the morning if you plan to drop them lunch so that they know to come to the office at the beginning of their lunch time.
- Please save surprise treats and celebrations for after school. Although very thoughtful, lunchtime is a very busy time for the office and we are not always able to stop tasks to find students on the playground.
Thank you for your support.

HEALTH AND ATTENDANCE
The laws around independent studies have changed, thank you for your patience as we transition to new contracts and procedures.
Here are some of the notable changes that have been made:
-Independent studies can be between 1 and 15 days.
-Only 1 contract is permitted per year, regardless of the length. We've checked with the district and this also applies to families who have already completed independent studies.
-We will not grant any new independent studies after Memorial Day. (May 27th)
-A 10 school day notice is required from the start date of the first independent study day.
Thank you for your patience and understanding through this transition. We greatly appreciate your time and cooperation.

Steindorf Bike Rodeo Moved to October 10th
Bike Rodeo RSVP
October 10th after school is the SJDoT’s Bike Rodeo program. This is optional and requires parental/guardian presence/supervision. This event will take place from 3:05 - 5:05pm.
A bike rodeo is a bicycle skills event which provides an opportunity for bicyclists to practice and develop skills that will help them to become better bicyclists and avoid typical crashes.
No permission slip is needed, but we do require that a parent or guardian be present during the time that their child(ren) are participating. Students need to bring their own bike and helmet. If they do not have a helmet, we will have a limited supply on hand to provide for these students.
Please RSVP through this link: https://forms.gle/3m8kyDPebVNUaJEKA. You can also sign up your student on arrival at the bike rodeo. However, the RSVP list gives the program leads an idea of how many students will be participating.

VOLUNTEERING
VOLUNTEER Code of Conduct
Yard Duty Volunteers Needed!
PARKING LOT SAFETY
Safe Travels To and From School - Do’s and Don'ts
NOTE: The city has installed a "Right Turn Only During School Hours" sign at the exit of our parking lot. This is now enforceable by police. TURNING LEFT OR TRYING TO GO STRAIGHT is a danger to our students. Especially those crossing in the crosswalk across the street. Please only turn right.
Do’s
Walk or ride your bike when possible. You can lock your bike at the small bike rack at the end of the middle school wings.
Pull forward in the drop-off zone.
Drive slowly through our parking lot and look for pedestrians crossing at any point.
If transporting your child via car, park in a designated parking spot or in the neighborhood.
Please ensure that your child is fully buckled when driving through our parking lot.
Wear a helmet, it’s the law! Children under the age of 18 in California are required to wear a helmet when riding or operating a non-motorized scooter, bicycle, roller skates or skateboard.
To reduce the risk of an accident, abide by the posted sign installed by the City of San Jose and only turn right out of our exit between 7:30 am and 3:30 pm.
Don'ts
Don’t drive through our parking lot with distractions that could cause a student injury - In the first six days of school, Principal Lee has noted children scooting without a helmet, drivers with a phone in their hand, and dogs in drivers’ laps (which is not illegal, but a potential distraction).
Don’t park in designated disabled spots without a disabled placard.
Don’t bring your pet with you to campus.
BRUNCH AND LUNCH MENUS
Cambrian School District is pleased to offer all students complimentary breakfast and lunch meals. Meals will be available for pickup in the cafeteria during scheduled meal periods. Please consider taking advantage of our FREE school meals by clicking here and signing up. It extends your grocery budget, saves time planning and preparing meals, and is comforting and familiar for kids to have school meals. In addition, every meal served is reimbursed by the USDA and funds go toward Child Nutrition staff wages. Please note that you are not taking food away from someone who needs it more – we have plenty to go around!
(Select brunch or lunch)
SPORTS
Please remember to turn in your sports donations at the beginning of your season. Donations help cover coaches, referees, equipment, uniforms, and more. If you are unable to donate the full amount please consider a partial donation. Requested donation amount is $150. We accept checks (made out to Steindorf) or cash in the front office. You may also pay online through our HSC store. Here is the link: SPORTS DONATIONS

The Giving Campaign is LIVE!
The Giving Campaign is the Home & School Club’s major fundraising program of the year — & it’s finally live! This year’s goal is $100K. The Giving Campaign funds so many amazing programs at Steindorf, such as the classroom libraries, assemblies & Maker Lab, to name a few . The suggested donation is $450 per student, but any donation is welcome & appreciated! Click HERE for more info. Click HERE to donate.
Girls on the Run: Coaches NEEDED!
Girls on the Run is a fun, evidence-based program that empowers 3rd-5th grade girls, while helping them train to complete a 5K! We have our Head Coach in place, but we’re looking for 1-2 more coaches to complete the team. We can’t run this program at Steindorf without at least one more coach. The season runs for 10 weeks from March through May. Click HERE for more info. For questions, please contact Catherine Winfield at jcathwin@gmail.com.
Walk and Roll Kick-off: Wednesday , Oct. 2nd!
We are excited to celebrate the International Walk & Roll to School day on Oct 2nd!
Similar to last year, we will use the Active4.me program to track Walk & Roll participation. All new students should have received their WnR QR tags today. Volunteers will scan these QR codes when your student arrives at school to mark their participation in the Walk & Roll Program.
Please register your student(s) by clicking HERE so we can accurately track the amount of distance we have collectively traveled. Optionally, when registering, parents can also sign up to receive notifications when their student walks/rolls to school & scans their tag at the gate. The notifications contain cool info such as cumulative distance traveled, amount of CO2 saved, etc.
If you have a returning student who has lost their tag from last year, please email us at steindorf.walkandroll@gmail.com. Include their 6 digit student ID & we will generate a replacement tag for them.
Lastly, don’t forget to join us for our upcoming Bike Rodeo on October 10th. Click HERE to RSVP.
