National MMIWG2S+ Awareness Day - May 5th
Sometimes called "Red Dress Day", the National Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Two-Spirit, Transgender, and Gender-Diverse+ Peoples Awareness Day this was first observed in 2010, happens every May 5th. The goal of the day is to honour and bring awareness to the thousands of Indigenous women and girls, and two-spirit people who have gone missing or who have been murdered. On this day, people all across Canada will try to give a voice to those who no longer have one. At Eastside Secondary, our Art students have been engaged in learning and artistic creations to represent the important issues that surround Red Dress Day. Our foyer is decorated with their creations.
Candlelight Vigil: Join a walk in downtown Belleville, followed by a candlelight vigil in Market Square on May 5 from 5-9 pm to honour all of our sisters who have been stolen and who are still missing.
Facts:
The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous women, girls, two-spirit, transgender, and gender-diverse+ peoples found that Indigenous girls are often targets of sexual exploitation and trafficking, with many being lured away from their homes and communities and forced into exploitative situations. Indigenous girls make up 7% of the total population of girls in Canada, yet they represented 50% of all female homicide victims in Canada between 2001 and 2017. Indigenous girls under 18 are more likely to be reported missing than non-Indigenous girls of the same age.
