Parking Lot Safety Procedures
Parking Lot Safety Procedures
Safety First: Protecting Our Students and Community
At West Utica Elementary, the safety of our students, staff, and families is our top priority. We understand that the parking lot can become congested, especially during drop-off and pick-up times. To ensure a safe and smooth experience for everyone, we ask that all parents and guardians adhere to the following safety procedures:
1. Patience and Courtesy
- Stay Calm: We understand that mornings can be stressful, but aggressive driving and impatience put our children at risk. Please remain calm and courteous at all times.
- Follow Staff Directions: Our staff members are there to guide traffic and ensure the safety of all students. Please follow their instructions without argument.
2. Drop-Off and Pick-Up Zones
- Stay in Designated Areas: Please use only the designated drop-off and pick-up zones. Parking or stopping in undesignated areas, such as bus lanes or fire lanes, is strictly prohibited.
- Quick Drop-Offs: Have your child ready to exit the vehicle quickly to avoid holding up the line. Parents should remain in the vehicle during drop-off to keep the line moving.
3. No Parking in the Drop-Off Lane
- Keep Traffic Flowing: The drop-off lane is for quick drop-offs only. Parking or leaving your vehicle unattended in this lane causes delays and increases the risk of accidents.
- Park Only in Designated Spaces: If you need to walk your child into the building, please park in a designated parking spot.
4. Speed Limits
- Drive Slowly: The parking lot speed limit is 5 mph. Driving slowly and attentively can prevent accidents and keep our children safe.
- Watch for Pedestrians: Always be on the lookout for children and parents crossing through the parking lot.
5. No Cell Phones
- Stay Focused: To minimize distractions and ensure safety, please refrain from using your cell phone while driving in the parking lot.
6. Reporting Unsafe Behavior
- Help Us Keep Everyone Safe: If you witness unsafe or aggressive behavior in the parking lot, please report it to the school office immediately. Your vigilance helps us maintain a safe environment for all.
Attendance Procedures
Early Dismissal
If you need to pick up your child early from school, please send a note to the office in the morning or call ahead to notify us of the early dismissal time. When you arrive, please come to the main office to sign out your child. For the safety and smooth operation of our dismissal process, no students will be dismissed after 3:30 PM. If an early dismissal is necessary, please plan to arrive before this time. We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring a safe and orderly end to the school day.
Tardy
Punctuality is important for your child’s learning and the smooth start of their day. If your child arrives at school after 9:05 AM, they will be marked tardy. In this case, a parent or guardian must accompany the student to the main office to sign them in. This ensures that your child is safely accounted for and receives a tardy slip before heading to class. Regular tardiness can disrupt your child’s education, so we encourage families to ensure students arrive on time each day.
Absent
Regular attendance is crucial for your child’s academic success. If your child will be absent from school, please notify the office by calling the attendance line at 586-797-6699 before 9 am. When your child returns to school, please provide a doctor’s note if the absence was due to a medical reason. This documentation is required for the absence to be excused. Consistent attendance helps ensure that your child doesn’t miss valuable instructional time, so we encourage families to schedule appointments outside of school hours whenever possible.
