Somerset Stars Present to ISD 197 School Board
On Monday evening, Hannah and Charlie, two of our 4th grade stars presented a Somerset Update to the ISD197 School Board. They shared come of the amazing things that happened that year at Somerset, like starting a student wellness committee and the new accessible playground. They also shared some of focuses for this year, such as word of the week and the Friday Focus on announcements. We are so proud of Hannah and Charlie and how well they represented Somerset!
Somerset Spiritwear Store is OPEN!
Our spirit wear store is live! Orders are due by Tuesday, November 19.
We have included all of the designs from last year, and added a few new features. Now, there is a Spanish “Estrellas de Somerset” option! Also, the items can be personalized by adding a name for an extra charge. (The name is either printed or embroidered, depending on the item.)
This year, everything will ship to individual homes—just in time for the holidays!
Somerset Kindness Day!
While it may seem early to be announcing a February event, we wanted to take this season of giving and give our Somerset families the opportunity to start collecting Kindness Day items now!
This year Somerset is continuing our Kindness Day and service learning approach to Valentine’s Day. Our Kindness Day will be held on Monday, February 10. Rather than focusing on store bought cards and candy we will take the opportunity to involve the students more authentically. Sometime during the day, children will be involved in service learning opportunity through the non-profit Doing Good Together.
We are looking forward to benefiting several local organizations including: Southview Acres, Ronald McDonald House, Animal Humane Society, Autism Society of MN, The Neighborhood House and a take home project to benefit our local community!
We are currently just securing our donations for this event. We will be sending a sign up for volunteer needs and delivery needs in January (so for now, save the date).
Donation items can be collected now and brought to the Somerset office, but please no later than Friday, January 31. Please review the available slots below and click on the button to sign up for your family's donations.
We are very excited about the opportunities for our students and trust that it will be a fun and meaningful day of celebrating our wonderful Somerset Star Students!
Somerset Parent Panel Volunteers Needed!
Who better to help new families learn about Somerset than Somerset parents?
The Somerset Kindergarten Showcase events are coming up on
- Tuesday, November 12 from 6:30-8:00pm (3 parents still needed)
- Thursday, November 14 from 9:00-10:30am (2 parents still needed)
We are looking for 5 parents and their Somerset Star to join us on a parent panel for the showcase. The task is simple, you will share something you love about Somerset Elementary and answer questions from parents that are exploring school options for their incoming kindergartener.

Love Somerset? Help us spread the word! Parents and guardians of children who will enter kindergarten in the 2024-2025 school year are invited to learn more about Somerset at our Kindergarten Showcase events on Tuesday, November 14 (6:30pm) and Thursday, November 16 (9:00am). During these events, families can meet our principal, take a tour of the school, and learn more about all of the exciting opportunities and experiences their child will have in kindergarten at Somerset. If you have not submitted your information to the Somerset Family Directory or you would like to edit your information, please fill out the Somerset Family Directory 2024-25 form.
New Volunteer Background Check Policy
School District 197 values our volunteers and their contributions to our schools. To ensure the safety of our students, we require background checks for certain volunteer roles.
A background check will now be required for all volunteers supervising student activities, whether on- or off-site, without direct staff observation. This includes, but is not limited to, hallway tutors, daytime field trip chaperones, co-curricular coaches, and overnight trip chaperones. If you fall into one of these categories, the school's administrative assistant and/or principal will guide you through completing the background check. The school district covers the cost of the background check. Thank you for helping us maintain a safe and supportive environment for our students!
To start the Background Check Process for the 2024-25 School Year, please complete the Background Check Request Form. You will be notified within a week by district communications that your background check has been approved.
