Leader in Me - Habit #1: Be Proactive
Habit 1: Be Proactive is the first habit in "The Leader in Me" program, emphasizing personal responsibility and the power of choice. It teaches students to take control of their actions and attitudes, rather than reacting to circumstances. Being proactive means recognizing that you are responsible for your behavior and making choices that align with your values and goals. For example, a student might proactively complete homework without being reminded or choose to respond calmly in a challenging situation rather than getting upset.
Parents can support their child's development of this habit by modeling proactive behavior at home and encouraging their child to take responsibility for their actions. They can involve their child in setting goals, planning their day, or solving problems together. For example, if a child forgets their homework, instead of blaming others or making excuses, parents can guide them to think about how they could have prepared better and what they can do differently next time. By discussing real-life situations and praising proactive choices, parents can help their child internalize this habit and apply it in all areas of life.

Leaders are Readers: Reading on the Lawn Event
This is our theme and our Wildly Important Goal (WIG) this year. Throughout this year we will be emphasizing the importance for your students to be reading at home every night. Reading or being read to every night is essential for elementary-age children because it builds vocabulary, improves comprehension, and fosters a love for learning. This daily practice enhances their ability to express themselves, strengthens their critical thinking skills, and prepares them for academic success. Whether they are reading on their own or listening to a story, this routine helps develop a lifelong habit that supports their overall growth and confidence in school. We hope you will be able to join us at our Reading on the Lawn event on Friday, September 13th @ 1:00pm.

School Alerts and Parent Notifications
As you know there was an incident on Friday afternoon when there was a car accident near Home Depot. We sent out an alert that went out immediately to notify you that there was potential of a delay at afterschool pick-up. Fortunately, the accident was cleared quickly and we experienced no major delays. Regular parent notifications are delivered at the time you choose to receive them.
How can I change or manage my notification settings?
ParentSquare allows users to customize their notifications by notification type and select their preferred delivery method from the school and/or district.
You can set the frequency of notifications for posts. The Instant setting will send all post notifications in real time. The Digest setting sends direct messages, alerts, and time-sensitive posts instantly, but sends all non-time-sensitive posts at the end of the day, reducing the number of notifications you receive daily. Note: we recommend the Digest setting.
If you would like to change your settings, click on this Manage your Notifications Link that will guide you through step-by-step directions.
NEW THIS YEAR: I-READY ONLINE LEARNING
What is i-Ready? i-Ready is an online program for reading and mathematics that will help your student’s teacher determine your student’s opportunities for growth, personalize their learning, and monitor progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows your teacher to meet your student exactly where they are and provides data to increase your student’s learning gains. i-Ready consists of two parts:
- The i-Ready Diagnostic: An adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your student’s instructional priorities. Each item a student sees is individualized based on their answer to the previous question. The Diagnostic will be given three times a year (Fall, January, and May)
- i-Ready Personalized Instruction: Provides students with lessons based on their individual skill level and opportunities for improvement, so your student can learn at a pace that is just right for them. These lessons are fun and interactive to keep your student engaged as they learn.
- Because our school has the opportunity to participate in a Math Study, all individualized Math learning will take place at school. Please DO NOT encourage your child to do additional math lessons at home to maintain the integrity of the math study.
- You can still encourage your children to work on their Reading i-Ready lessons at home. It is recommended that they have 45 minutes of i-Ready lessons each week. You can check their progress at home, just have your child login and you can see their progress.

Reading Fundraiser - Camp Read-a-lot Theme this year is " Camp Read-a-lot". It will be very similar to last year's reading fundraiser with a few variations.
1) Packets of info will go home Friday 9/6 and we have stickers with a registration QR code
2) We are using a different platform this year that allows for both a flat fee donation and an option to donate per minute read. Frank the fish is our mascot (like Hercules the Horse last year), he will get to hang out with the class with the most pledges each day.
3) There will be reading logs like last year, that if completed and turned in, result in a prize regardless of pledge amount.
Attendance at School =Success
- 95% Attendance Goal: Consistent attendance is crucial for elementary-age children because it ensures they receive the full benefits of classroom learning, social interactions, and essential academic routines. Regular attendance helps students build a strong foundation in their studies, develop good habits, and stay on track with their peers. This year, our school has set a goal for all students to achieve at least 95% attendance to earn the H.E.R.O. (Here, Every day, Ready, On time) award, recognizing their commitment to being present and engaged in their education.
- Independent Study is Available: If you have a know extended absence of more that 3 days, you can ask for Independent Study Packets that your student can complete for academic and attendance credit. You must give a minimum of SEVEN days notice to the office and teacher for a packet to be created, but FOURTEEN (14) days is preferred. If the student completes and turns in the packet the absences will not count against your child.
- Attendance Challenge - If we can have an overall attendance at the end of the school year of at least 95%, then the students will be able to duct tape Mr. Peel to a wall and throw cream pies in his face. Last year we grew from 92% to 93.7% attendance - which was fantastic, but Mission Meadows still had the third lowest overall attendance of all Vista USD elementary school. Let's reach our goal this year Mustangs.
Birthday Celebrations
Parents wanting to celebrate a child’s birthday should not bring cupcakes or cake to school. We encourage small goodie bags instead that can be given to students to take home with them at the end of the day. Acceptable food items include popcorn, frozen 100% fruit bars, frozen yogurt, animal crackers, graham crackers, Goldfish, and fruit. Parents can also celebrate with party favors such as pencils or a book donated to the class. Please note: All birthday celebrations must be pre arranged with the teacher. Teachers will inform you of any classroom student allergies that may exist.
New Cell Phone Policy
Elementary students are not to use a smartphone or other electronic signaling device (including, but not limited to, cell phone, smartwatch, tablet) on campus. Specifically, such devices must be turned off and kept in the student’s backpack at all times while on school campus and at school activities, except under the following circumstances:
In case of an emergency, or in response to a perceived threat of danger.
When a teacher or administrator grants permission to the student, subject to any reasonable limitation imposed by that teacher or administrator.
When a licensed physician and surgeon determines it is necessary for the student’s health or well-being.
When it is required in a student’s IEP or Section 504 plan.
Mobile communication devices shall be turned off and kept in the student’s backpack at all times while in school. The following disciplinary actions will be taken if students fail to comply with the school’s mobile communication policy:
Warning/Redirection: Student is warned and redirected to put away the mobile communication device.
1st offense: mobile communication device is confiscated and submitted to the office, and the student may pick it up after school has ended.
2nd offense: mobile communication device is confiscated and submitted to the office, it will be held until the student’s parent/guardian can pick it up from school.
