Attendance
Hoover 2019-2020 Library
Hoover Elementary School has a treasure of books for our students this year!
Students in K-2 will visit the library two times a month with their class. The library time consists of listening to a story, as well as choosing books to enjoy at home.
Grades 3-5 have a new opportunity this year. We are excited to announce that the district has hired a Library Media Specialist, Mrs. DeStefano. They will have class with her on Thursday or Friday afternoon. They will spend the first half of their 40 minute class with the Library Specialist. Parent volunteers are invited to help with checking in/out books for the last 20 minutes of class, two times a month.
All students will be invited to check out two books. The books will have to be returned to the library before new titles can be selected. For your convenience, there is a book drop that is located in the foyer of the school. Students are able to return their books at any time, not just library day, when they are done reading at home.
The Hoover Library is run by volunteers. That is YOU! All our welcome! Volunteers help with book selection, checking books in/out and reshelving to keep the library tidy.
All library volunteers need to be registered with the Bridge through Melrose Public Schools (https://www.melroseschools.com/district-home/bridge). Your name badge will be at the school in the office once you are vetted. Please wear your badge every time you are working in the library.
The volunteer sign-up is online and has library dates and times for each class. We have many spots available for you to serve and help our students grow in their love of reading. There are three volunteers needed for the K-2 classes and two volunteers for grades 3-5. https://signup.com/login/entry/718037034098. The online sign-up allows for reminders, switching dates and finding a replacement if you need to miss your time.
If you are new to volunteering, we offer training on how to check in/out books. Please email hooverlibrary@melroseschools.com and we will be in contact to set up a convenient time.
Thank you in advance for your time and investment in our students!
Number Talks
What is a Number Talk?
Number talks are short 5-10 minute discussion where the focus is on mental math. Teachers present the class with a problem and students are given time to mentally solve the problem. Hand signals can be used by the teacher to help engage all students. Three to four student strategies are shared with the whole class.
What are the benefits of a Number Talk?
Number talks allow children the opportunity to engage in rich meaningful conversations about how numbers work. Students are encouraged to solve problems using mental math strategies. Students have a chance to share and explain strategies. They justify answers while thinking and acting like mathematicians. This allows students to develop their mental math computational skills while strengthening their understanding of the number system.
