Sawnee Elementary
October 2024
A Note from Mrs. Davis
Dear Sawnee Families,
We call October "Fun-tober" because of all of the fun things happening this month! This week we had our 2nd annual West Fest at West Forsyth High School and it was a huge success. Next week, we will continue to collect canned food goods for The Place. The West Community is in a "food fight" with the South Community and the community with the largest donations will be announced at the WFHS vs SFHS football game on October 11th. Please bring any donations to your student's homeroom teacher and we will watch the boxes fill up with your generosity.
The book fair kicks off this week. Thank you to Mrs. Posey, Mrs. Otwell, and Mrs. Stowe for organizing and supporting this fabulous event. I know I always spend too much!
October 17th is the 50th day of school - can you believe it? We would love to see our Sawnee family dressed like the 50s, so get out the poodle skirts and scarves. October 18th is our Online Learning Day for students. Teachers will be communicating expectations for assignments to your students and through regular communication. Due to conferences, teachers will have limited access to respond to questions. They will support the students with any concerns as soon as they can.
Also this month, we have our annual Trunk or Treat at West Forsyth High School on October 28th. We will be collecting candy donations beginning this week to hand out at this free event. Mark your calendars!
A couple of reminders - when eating with your student, you may not include any other students with yours. Even if you know the family very well or the students ask to sit with you, they cannot join without their visitor with them. In addition, you may not take pictures or videos in the cafeteria. These are safety concerns and we appreciate your support. If your student has allergies, we have partnered with our PTO and PAL Pantry to provide snacks in case one is needed. Please reach out to either Nurse Kate or Nurse Robyn for more details.
As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or just want to give feedback, please do not hesitate to contact us. It is a pleasure to work with all of our families.
Sincerely,
Kimberly Davis
Principal

Digital Citizenship
Forsyth County Schools is partnering with Neptune Navigate to provide lessons focusing on digital citizenship. Each month will dig into a different topic. During the month of October, students will be learning about Cyberbullying. Part of being Safe, Respectful and Responsible is using kind words when interacting online. If we notice unkind behavior, we need to choose to be an Upstander by speaking up to the bully or a trusted adult.
We encourage you to continue the conversation at home with some of these questions.
- How would you describe a bully?
- If you saw someone being mean or unkind online, what would you do?
- Why is important to be an Upstander? Is there anything that scares you about being an Upstander?
Further questions for upper elementary:
- What are the 4 steps you should take if you are ever the target of a cyberbully? Why are they important?
- Have you ever had an experience with a bully? How did it make you feel?

Sawnee Soars Fundraiser- What a month! We set a lofty goal of $50,000 and at the very last minute, we tipped the scales and topped it! Our total amount raised this year was $51,483! We are so thankful to all of you who participated! There were some battles amongst classrooms for the top spot in each grade and it was so fun seeing how committed everyone was to grabbing that top prize from Best Ice Cream on Wheels. As always, our social media pages were tracking all of the leaderboards and you can find details on how everything wrapped up there. We're looking forward to updating everyone as the months progress. Every single dime raised goes directly into our school. THANK YOU, again, for your support!
