A Message From Mrs. O'Shaughnessy
Write it on your heart
that every day is the best day in the year.
He is rich who owns the day, and no one owns the day
who allows it to be invaded with fret and anxiety.
Finish every day and be done with it.
You have done what you could.
Some blunders and absurdities, no doubt crept in.
Forget them as soon as you can, tomorrow is a new day;
begin it well and serenely, with too high a spirit
to be cumbered with your old nonsense.
This new day is too dear,
with its hopes and invitations,
to waste a moment on the yesterdays.
I wish you and your family a Happy New Year, and may 2025 be our best year yet!
2024: What A Year
As we close the books on an incredible 2024, we reflect on a year filled with remarkable achievements, meaningful connections, and countless moments of pride for our school community.
We were honored to host visits from NYC Chancellor and Deputy Chancellor, who were deeply impressed by the vibrant learning happening in our early childhood classes (3K and Pre-K). Additionally, Associate Commissioner Elisa Alvarez and Chief Mirza Sánchez-Medina, Ed.D., M.Div., joined us to engage with our exceptional ENL students. Together, they experienced the transformative power of project-based learning, culminating in our students traveling to Tweed Courthouse to present their work—a moment of immense pride for all.
Our athletic programs flourished as our basketball team made it all the way to the championship game, supported enthusiastically by our dedicated cheerleaders. Our soccer team celebrated the opening of their very own field, while our running clubs embraced a new track, inspiring physical excellence across our community.
This year brought transitions as we bid farewell to beloved educators—Ms. Gizzo, Ms. Garces, Ms. Vazquez, and Mr. Alboum—whose contributions will forever be cherished. At the same time, we welcomed 10 new teachers who have already begun making their mark on our students’ lives.
Academically, our students achieved the highest NYS Math Scores ever, a testament to their hard work and the unwavering dedication of our staff. The arts shone brightly as our talented musicians and artists showcased their work through captivating concerts and a stunning art show.
Our Student Council rose as powerful advocates, representing the voices of their peers and shaping our school community in meaningful ways.
We welcomed a new program to our school, Dual Language Spanish! PS 88Q proudly hosts Dual Language, NYU NEST, Gifted and Talented, and STEM ICT.
As we celebrate these milestones, we look forward to the opportunities 2025 will bring. With the momentum we’ve built this year, we are confident that even greater successes lie ahead.
Here’s to another year of growth, achievement, and unity. Thank you to every student, staff member, and family for making 2024 truly unforgettable!
Big Apple Awards
What are the Big Apple Awards?
The Big Apple Awards recognize and celebrate New York City teachers who:
- Inspire students to be their best selves, dream, and advocate for their future
- Model equitable learning with high expectations for the diverse and dynamic needs of all students
- Affirm students’ identities, unique gifts, and genius
- Enrich their school communities by partnering with families, community members, and community-based organizations
By honoring these teachers, we recognize all those who go above and beyond to serve our students and families!
During the school year, 15 Big Apple Award recipients will have the opportunity to apply to participate in the Big Apple Fellowship, which includes engagement in leadership development sessions, professional learning communities, and conversations with the Chancellor.
Nominate a Teacher for the Big Apple Award
