Small School. Big Opportunity.
Vision Statement:
Mercer School students are empowered to succeed in personal pathways, expand their potential, find joy in learning, and thrive in a diverse and global community.
Bringing the Strategic Plan to Life
One of Mercer School's core values is fostering "Environmental and Outdoor Awareness and Education," and this week’s activities highlighted that commitment. Students explored sustainability practices at Action Floors and discovered the rich biodiversity of the Van Vliet Hemlocks during a guided tour led by the North Lakeland Discovery Center. These hands-on experiences deepened their understanding of environmental stewardship and the natural world around them, while also aligning with Mercer School’s strategic priorities in several key areas:
Teaching and Learning:
Both field trips provided immersive, real-world learning opportunities. At Action Floors, students witnessed sustainable manufacturing practices firsthand, reinforcing lessons on sustainability, technology, and resource management from their science curriculum. Similarly, the tour of Van Vliet Hemlocks offered in-depth insights into ecology and biodiversity, enhancing their understanding of natural ecosystems and forest management.
Environment for Learning:
By stepping outside the classroom, students experienced dynamic learning environments that enriched their education. The industrial tour at Action Floors gave students a behind-the-scenes look at how local businesses operate sustainably, while the hike through Van Vliet Hemlocks immersed them in nature, fostering curiosity and promoting outdoor education.
Developing the Whole Child:
These experiences nurtured intellectual, emotional, and physical growth. Learning about sustainability encouraged students to think critically about environmental responsibility, while the hike at Van Vliet Hemlocks promoted physical activity and mental well-being. Interactive activities like the Thicket Game also strengthened decision-making and problem-solving skills.
Culture and Community:
Both trips reinforced Mercer School's connection to the local community. Action Floors, a local business that provided the gym floor for our school, showcased the value of supporting environmentally responsible enterprises. The partnership with North Lakeland Discovery Center highlighted the community's dedication to environmental education and stewardship, giving students the chance to engage with local experts and resources.
College and Career Readiness:
At Action Floors, students gained exposure to career paths in manufacturing, sustainability, and environmental technology. The tour of Van Vliet Hemlocks offered a glimpse into careers in ecology, biology, and conservation. These experiences opened students' eyes to a wide range of potential future career opportunities, aligning with our focus on preparing students for college and the workforce.
These field trips exemplified Mercer School’s dedication to offering well-rounded, impactful educational experiences that foster environmental awareness while supporting key areas of teaching, learning, and personal growth.
Van Vliet Program
On Friday, October 18th, 5th and 6th grade students embarked on an exciting field trip to the North Lakeland Discovery Center (NLDC) to explore the wonders of nature at Van Vliet Hemlocks. The day was filled with educational activities, hands-on learning, and memorable experiences in one of northern Wisconsin’s most pristine natural environments.
The students arrived at NLDC at 9:00 am, where they were greeted by Hannah, their instructor for the day. The trip began with an engaging introduction to the history and unique features of Van Vliet Hemlocks, one of the last remaining old-growth forests in the area. Students also learned about the geology and landscape formation of the region, gaining insights into the forces that shaped the forest they were about to explore.
After meeting Hannah, the group set off on the first of two hikes, starting on the right side of the Lakeview Loop, and continuing through Yellow Birch and Hemlock Loop, with a detour on Section 16 Spur. Along the way, students engaged in discussions about the habitat and ecology of the forest, learning about the predator-prey relationships and how animals have adapted to their environments. They also participated in the “Thicket Game,” an interactive activity that brought to life the dynamics of survival in the wild.
After the morning hike, the students gathered at the parking lot for a well-deserved lunch break. Following lunch, they resumed their exploration, this time hiking the left side of the Lakeview Loop, continuing through Yellow Birch and onto the Bog Loop trail. The second hike introduced the students to a new set of habitats and ecosystems, deepening their understanding of the biodiversity within Van Vliet Hemlocks.
After the hikes, they headed back to NLDC for a final visit to the nature center. During their stop at the center, students had the chance to explore exhibits and reflect on what they had learned throughout the day.
Students then boarded the bus and returned to school, with new knowledge and appreciation for the natural world. The trip to North Lakeland Discovery Center provided an enriching experience, combining outdoor adventure with valuable lessons in ecology, conservation, and the interconnectedness of living systems.
A special thank you to the North Lakeland Discovery Center for hosting us and providing such an unforgettable day of learning in the great outdoors!

High School TechEd Students Tour Action Floors
Sustainable Hardwood Flooring
Recently, our high school students had the exciting opportunity to visit Action Floors, the very company that supplied the hardwood floors for our gymnasium. This hands-on field trip gave students a glimpse into the world of sustainable manufacturing and the intricate process behind creating top-tier sports flooring.
At the heart of Action Floors' process is their use of northern maple wood, known for its durability and performance in athletic environments. Carl Anderson, our tour guide and a key figure at Action Floors, shared how the wood is carefully selected and prepared. The northern maple is first milled and dried to a precise moisture content of 7-8%—critical for ensuring the longevity and quality of the flooring.
Action Floors prides itself on being environmentally responsible. Their zero-waste production process not only minimizes material waste but also contributes to a negative carbon footprint. Students learned that even sawdust from the production process is put to use: it heats the building through a wood-fired heater, with a natural gas backup system for added efficiency. This focus on sustainability makes Action Floors a leader in eco-friendly manufacturing.
Inside the production facility, students were able to see the high-tech machinery in action. Wood that arrives at the factory already dry is put through a series of inspections by sophisticated machines, which have taken over tasks once performed by multiple employees, who have since been moved to other roles within the company. One of the highlights was watching a computerized saw, which scans the wood and directs where to cut for maximum efficiency. The planer-router machine then shapes the wood for tongue-and-groove installation, ensuring the precision necessary for high-performance flooring.
Students also witnessed the innovative ways Action Floors reduces waste. Scraps from the production line are repurposed into stacking sticks used during the drying process. Each step is part of their effort to use every piece of wood, no matter how small, which further reinforces their commitment to sustainability.
Finally, students observed the sorting process, where one line of employees stacks the completed hardwood flooring, and another machine sorts the wood by length. Action Floors even offers an economy wood floor option that uses metal backing, providing an affordable and sustainable choice for gyms and other facilities.
This trip gave our students a unique perspective on the intersection of industry, technology, and environmental stewardship. By touring Action Floors, they not only saw where the materials for our gym floor came from but also learned valuable lessons about sustainability, efficiency, and innovation in modern manufacturing.

Attendance Matters
For children and teens, attending school isn’t just about getting an education. It’s about developing their whole selves—emotionally, socially, and personally.
Attending school regularly and in person gives students the ability to follow daily routines, as well as connect with friends, peers, teachers, and others outside their family circle. They’re able to engage and interact, to use their brains and try new things. They can be part of a team. They have a purpose.
Help your child be their best self. Promote good attendance.
