Writing - Not for the Faint of Heart
Teaching writing is one of the most challenging skills a teacher will impart to students. Writing is the by-product of many other skills coming together. Skills like comprehension of text, which is layered on top of foundational reading skills, understanding a prompt to respond to, then selecting the most important information that aligns with the prompt and the main idea or theme of a text. Then, the organization of the writing, spelling words automatically, having a command of vocabulary that goes with the content they are reading. Not to mention the motor skills required to either type a response or the motor skills to write quickly enough to keep up with their thinking. Writing is hard! Helping students put the pieces together is both art and skill and our teachers are working to meet students where they are and to move them along in their development.
Ms. Sanchez and our upper grade teachers are working to make this process approachable for students. Ms. Sanches used a visual to show students the parts of a well composed essay. Using an exemplar model, Ms. Sanchez highlighted and color coded the different parts and sentences so students can see how it all comes together. After students did this with texts, their written responses improved. Giving students time to analyze exemplar work is so important so they can replicate this process. Thank you to all our teachers for supporting the important work our students do every day.
Bike and Roll To School!
This Wednesday, October 9, is the annual Bike and Roll to school. This national event promotes ways to commute to schools that are environmentally friendly, helps kids see the city around them, and connects communities to public transportation routes. DC has one of the most well attended events in the nation! This year, our very own Ludlow Taylor Dancing Stars will perform as part of the opening festivities! Come support our students and enjoy a bike ride to school with us!
Staffing Updates
- We are currently interviewing for our inclusion, special education teacher position
- We are waiting for on-boarding to be complete for another aide in our ECE CES classroom
- We are interviewing for another aide in our K-2 CES classroom
- We have a long-term sub for Mrs. Hannah!
- We are interviewing for another aide for Mrs. Campbell's class. In the meantime, we are assigning other aides to support and assigning substitutes when we have them. We also have a volunteer who supports when they are here.
- We are waiting for final approval for the 1st grade teacher position. The request has cleared initial approval and we are waiting for final approval.
