From the Principal
Welcome to the New Year, Chatfield Families!
We are looking forward to a wonderful second semester with all of our students and families. We hope you had time to laugh, play, and relax with your family during the winter break.
๐We are thrilled to kick off 2025 with exciting news and celebrations! ๐
The D51 Foundation has recognized Chatfield Elementary School for the Outstanding School in the District for Academic Growth in Math! This incredible honor is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and perseverance of our students, staff, and families. Woot! Woot!
Our school will be officially recognized at the White Iced Celebration on Saturday, February 1st, at the CMU Ballroom. Itโs an evening to celebrate excellence, and we couldnโt be prouder of our amazing Chatfield community for achieving this award
Hereโs to continuing this momentum and making 2025 another year of growth and success. Thank you for being a part of our Chatfield family!

January Social Emotional Learning: Persistence
During the month of January, students are learning about persistence. We teach students that persistence means sticking with something; even when itโs challenging, you donโt give up! Do your BEST to try and try again... EVEN WHEN ITโS HARD...until you finish or figure it out!
Here are things to look for or discuss with your child:
- What can you do or tell yourself when you feel stuck?
- How can you stay calm when you face challenges or make mistakes?
- What strategies did you try before asking for help?
- How can you break the task into smaller steps if you feel overwhelmed?
- Have you thought about what didnโt work and tried a new way?
Family Suggestions for Persistence
DIY Science Experiments
- Activity: Try experiments that might fail the first time, like building a baking soda volcano or a paper airplane that flies far.
- Lesson: Show how trial and error leads to success.
- Tip: Ask, โWhat can we do differently to make it work?โ
Create an Art Masterpiece
- Activity: Start a big art project, like a mural or paper mache sculpture.
- Lesson: Show that great art takes time and that mistakes can lead to creativity.
- Tip: Work together, but let your child take the lead when solving challenges.
Family Game Night with Strategy
- Activity: Play games that require strategy, like checkers, Connect 4, Blokus, Jenga, or Battleship.
- Lesson: Teach persistence by showing how sticking with a strategy (even when losing) can lead to improvement.
- Tip: Highlight how effort and focus matter more than winning.
Lego Build-a-Thon
- Activity: Build a challenging Lego set or create something without instructions.
- Lesson: Encourage trying different ways to connect pieces and solving design challenges.
- Tip: Take breaks and return with fresh ideas if it gets frustrating.
Baking Challenge
- Activity: Bake something tricky (like decorated cookies or a layered cake).
- Lesson: Teach patience when measuring ingredients, following steps, and retrying if something goes wrong.
- Tip: Show that even mistakes (like messy frosting) can be delicious!
Obstacle Course Fun
- Activity: Create a DIY obstacle course indoors or outside.
- Lesson: Encourage kids to complete the course, even if itโs tricky at first, and improve with practice.
- Tip: Time each round and cheer for improvements.

Lunch with Learners
If you would like to have lunch with your child, please let the office know. We have created spaces for you to be able to sit and enjoy your time with your child. You are welcome to sit with your child in the grade-level cafeteria area, if there is space.
When students are dismissed for recess, we kindly ask that families leave at this time so that we can clean the table for the next grade levels' families.
