Message from our Principal
Dear Black Bear Families-
The last few weeks were full of fun and celebrations! During the week of September 22nd to 27th, our Library Specialist, Kathleen Cunnington, facilitated a successful week of book fair fun! Students and families enjoyed purchasing books and other exciting items all week long! All profits from the Book Fair go to keeping our library stocked with interesting books for the diverse range of interests and developmental levels of our students! To add to the book fair, our Literacy Specialist, Ms. Garber, hosted a PJ Family Reading Night on Wednesday, September 25th! Tualatin Elementary families and students enjoyed hearing stories at school from community members and teachers! It was a very successful night celebrating the joy of reading and community!
Last Friday, September 27th, we held our first PBIS Assembly of the year! At the assembly, Mrs. Hinkle led our Black Bears in the school song, Mrs. Edison led the school in celebrating students who earned awards for being Safe, Kind, and Responsible or a PAX leader for September! Classrooms also earned the first round of Golden Awards for this year! Classrooms earn the following awards for demonstrating PAX behavior in the halls (the Golden Shoe!), demonstrating excellent behavior during recess (the Golden Whistle), excellent behavior in PE and Wham (the Golden Ball), excellent behavior in Music (the Golden Music Note), and for excellent behavior in assemblies and demonstrating Black Bear Pride (the Golden Bear)! When you get a chance, please check in with your student about which award they are working on and what Golden Award they are hoping to receive as a class! You can see all of September recipients in this slideshow!
Finally, our fabulous PTA and Specials Teachers, Mr. Hill, Ms. Olson, and Mrs. Hinkle, collaborated to plan and host our annual Fun Run to raise money for student enrichment activities on Friday, October 4th. Not only did students accomplish plenty of running and walking during the day, but teachers, Avery, our Black Bear, and the Portland Pickle raced for the glory of winning a friendly race! I’m happy to report that the Portland Pickle won! I’m also happy to report that the PTA met their fundraising goals! To celebrate this amazing achievement, Tualatin Elementary is planning a special assembly to reminisce about the fun week and to top it off with a few select staff members receiving a pie to face!
Sincerely,
Dr. Bobbie Brown
TEAF is Returning to Tualatin Elementary!
Tualatin Elementary Arts Foundation (T.E.A.F.) is our after-school enrichment program designed to provide students with a variety of artistic, cultural, academic, and recreational classes and clubs. Prior to Covid, we had a thriving program and we are excited to bring it back to our students!
We are starting with an abbreviated Fall Term as we get things up and running. Classes will be held on Monday and Thursday for 2nd-5th grade students for the Fall term only. The session will run from November 4-December 12. (5 weeks). Classes will be held from 2:30-3:45. A snack and transportation home will be provided. Winter (Feb-March) and Spring (April-May) Terms will be open to students in 1-5 grades.
Registration forms will be going home on Monday and Tuesday, 10/7-8. Look for these in your student's backpack. Registration forms will be due on Friday, October 18 and you will be notified on Monday and Tuesday, 10/21-22 of the class assignment. Payment will be due by Friday, 10/25. If we do not receive payment, we will move to the waitlist to fill that spot. Students who qualify for free and reduced lunch (based on the family income survey) will have a reduced fee of $10. Limited scholarships are also available. Please note on your registration form if you believe you qualify for the $10 reduced rate or to request a scholarship.
To ensure equity, registration is completed via a lottery system, and not on a first-come, first-served basis. All effort is made to ensure that students will get into at least one of their choices, however, with the abbreviated term, we may not be able to get all students into a class. Once all students have been registered for one class, then we will register for additional classes if spaces are available. If your student does not get into a class of choice in the Fall Term, they will have priority in the Winter Term.
Family Reading Night
Meet the Recess Rangers!
Our Recess Rangers keep our students safe at recess and in the cafeteria. In the cafeteria, they ensure the lines move quickly and smoothly, the students are eating their lunches, and help usher the students outside to recess where the recess crew greets them! The Recess Rangers are each assigned a section of the play area so they can ensure students are being safe, kind, and responsible. They treat minor injuries, navigate social interactions, and referee team games. They are a valuable part of our school community. When you see them, be sure to say "hi!" and thank them for all their hard work!
PTA Virtual Meeting
You’re invited to attend this month’s Virtual PTA Meeting on Tuesday, October 8th at 7:00pm. Hear from our PTA Board and stay up to date on the latest volunteer opportunities and upcoming events. You do not have to be a PTA Member to attend. The meeting is held on GoogleMeet.

Art Lit at Tualatin Elementary
Art education in TTSD elementary schools is 100% volunteer based. Our PTA provides all supplies and lesson plans, but we rely upon volunteers to bring art into our classrooms. Please consider helping in your student's classroom.
Volunteers do NOT need to have any artistic inclination. Each month (6 times/year), we will have a training lesson where we teach volunteers about an artist as well as how to teach the project to our students. Total time commitment is 1-3 hours, 6 times throughout the year. Our goal is to have at least 3 volunteers for each classroom so that there is double and triple coverage in case you are unable to help with every single project. In addition, there are free art classes hosted by the TTSD District where Art Lit volunteers can take classes from professional artists. For questions or further information, please email TualArtLit@gmail.com

OBOB Helpers Needed!
Do you have a 3rd, 4th or 5th grader that will be a part of our fun reading program Oregon Battle of the Books? If so, we need your help. Each grade has 4 meetings per year during their lunch/recess. We also have 3 battle days and an assembly that will need volunteers. Volunteers will help with score keeping, timers, asking already prepared questions and other items as needed. The students are really excited for OBOB and to keep it going this year I will need your help. Please email Kathleen Cunnington at kcunnington@ttsd.k12.or.us if you have questions or would like to volunteer.
