CO2-Powered Race Cars at OBJH
Doug Sells' class at Oakland Bay Junior High held an exciting and innovative CO2-powered race car event. Students were tasked with designing their very own race cars from balsa wood, powered by CO2 cartridges. As expected, the creativity on display was as diverse as our student body, resulting in unique and personalized car designs!
Once completed, the students raced their cars down a designated track. Most cars clocked in impressive speeds, typically finishing between 1-2 seconds! However, not all went smoothly—disasters struck when some cars broke during the race, a result of having to use polymer materials in place of balsa wood due to a shortage. As shown in the image labeled "Disaster Strikes," these mishaps certainly added to the day's excitement.
This project is an excellent example of vertical alignment in education, as Doug is helping prepare students for potential entry into the MET Academy at Shelton High School. By participating in hands-on projects like these, students gain valuable skills and insights that will benefit them if they choose to pursue a career and technical education pathway in the MET Academy in the future.

HEAT Cooking Classes
Last Tuesday marked the first of three sessions of HEAT Cooking Classes. Participants learned how to make chicken caesar salad wraps and an orange, carrot, and jicama salad from scratch. During class, participants cooked a meal with the help of a professional nutritionist, learned about nutrition labels, practiced knife skills, looked at portion control and the food groups, and gained knowledge on thrifty meal shopping and meal planning.
