Kōkopu Newsletter
Term 1 Week 6 Monday 4th March 2024
Principals Message
After a very exciting week at Lonsdale camp, our senior students have settled back into the normal routines of school. This week rooms 1 and 2 are off to Auckland for a night at Kelly Tarlton's and the Zoo. I would like to say a big thank you to all the parents who have helped at our camps. We are lucky here at Kōkopu School to have such great support.
Welcome to our new students, Archer Lea Rm1, Sam Quinn Rm4 Ben Quinn Rm2 and Soren Weavers Rm 1, who have started over the last few weeks.
As part of our Strategic Plan, we are aiming to create some new murals around the school that represent who we are. Our first set will be started this week with an extension group helping Mr O paint 5 house group murals for the room 2 wall.
Last week our year 7-8 students participated in a day learning about puberty and the changes they face going into their teenage years. The program is delivered by NEST Consulting who we have used over the last 4 years. Along with the normal health program running room 6, the NEST Consulting day is a great learning opportunity in a safe and caring environment. The parent meeting the night before was also a good opportunity for parents to learn what was going to be taught and pick up some helpful advice for home.
We are sad to say goodbye to Pauline Simmonds who has been a Teacher Aide with us over the last 7 years. Pauline has won a new Teacher Aide position at Whangarei Boys High School. Her contribution to our school and students has been wonderful. The students and staff will miss her and we wish her the very best in her new role.
Please see below for our TA job position link.

Reminders
Hats and sun safety – Please make sure your child has a hat for term 1 and 4. Students also need to bring togs, towel and a drink bottle everyday.
Children are swimming everyday. Those with long hair must wear a swimming cap while using the school pool. Please ensure your child brings one along with their swimming cap, togs and towels everyday.
Lost property – Please name all your children's clothes, including togs and hats. We already have a growing pile. We gave a lot of unclaimed clothing away to charity shops last year.
Head Lice - We have been notified that we have cases of head lice at school. The key to dealing with lice is to check, treat and inform.
1. Check: Check your child’s hair regularly - once a week is a good guide.
2. Treat: If you find live lice or unhatched eggs, treat your child as soon as you can. Your chemist can advise you on the best way to deal with the problem.
3. Inform: Let the school know when your child has lice or nits so we can then tell other parents that there is an outbreak, so everyone can check and treat their own children.
Will my child have to stay away from school?
The Ministry of Health advise that a child with live lice should stay away from school until treatment has started. Once the treatment has started, your child can come back to school.
Yummy Stickers
Once again we are collecting Yummy Stickers. So please collect the Yummy cut-out labels from bags (each cut-out label is worth 10 stickers) and individual Yummy apple stickers. Yummy apples are available from New World, PAK’nSAVE and participating Four Square stores. The more you collect, the more sports gear you get so get going and start collecting your Yummy cut-out labels and stickers now!
