Construction Update
As most of you know our construction building plan approval has been delayed due to issues with building code and requirements for storm shelters adopted last summer and brought to attention in late November. We have been working diligently since this issue arose, and together, with the help of several advocates and legislators, it was possible to get revisions adopted into law that will allow us to proceed with our gym/activity center and band room. The tornados that hit the state and destroyed schools as this issue was being debated put added concerns for student safety on the front of everyone's minds.
We got word from the state fire marshal today that our current storm shelter will meet our needs. The project is in the approval and bidding stages and will move forward. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we worked through this issue. Be sure and thank Senators Petty and Caldwell, and Representatives Puryear, Fite, and Evans for advocating specifically for Mountainburg in this case.

- Wyatt Seratt was hired by SPF America following an interview at Draft Day in March.
- Chrissy Picard was hired by Mercy-Fort Smith as an RN after graduating from the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith.

Choking happens when an object lodges in the throat or windpipe blocking the flow of air. In adults, a piece of food is usually to blame. Young children often choke on small objects. Choking is life-threatening as it cuts off oxygen to the brain. Giving first aid quickly to someone who is choking is essential. If a person can't cough, talk, cry or laugh forcefully, give first aid to the person.
The American Red Cross recommends the following steps:
- Give five back blows.
- If this does not dislodge the object, give five abdominal thrusts aka the Heimlich maneuver.
- Continue alternating these steps until the choking object is dislodged.
If you're the only rescuer, give back blows and abdominal thrusts first. Then call 911 or your local emergency number for help. If another person is there, have that person call for help while you give first aid.

Athletic Physicals and DragonFly Information
It is time to start thinking about physicals and your child's DragonFly for next season. Students who plan on participating in grades 7th - 12th athletics for the 2023-2024 school year will need an updated physical before he/she can participate. Physicals are good for one year from the date you receive it. For example, if your child's physical was in August 2022, his/her physical is good until August 2023. You can get a physical for your child a couple ways:
- Receive a physical from your child's pediatrician. If you choose to go this route, please print both the following forms, parents fill out the Health History Form and take the Physical Form to . These are the physical papers the AAA would like for us to use.
- The Mountainburg Family Clinic has agreed to do a physical for $25. This is very cheap compared to most. It may even be more economical than some co-pays to pay the $25. The clinic should have the form, so you will not need the above form for the clinic.
New athletes or incoming 7th grade athletes, you will need to create a DragonFly account and complete the required items. Please see the Parent Module video for help with creating and completing a DragonFly account.
Existing 8th - 12th athletes, you will need a physical and an update to your DragonFly account. Everyone has to sign off on the Sports Medicine and AAA Participation Agreement every year.
If you are interested in learning more about the health and safety of athletes, please view the following documents: Concussion, Heat Illness, Sports Medicine Fact Sheet.
We are looking forward to the 2023-2024 athletic seasons. Go Dragons!
