BEH Weekly Family Message
February 3rd, 2025
Weekly Recap
Summary of the Week:
We continued to deal with high absence rates last week, but we will continue to reach out and offer support for families that are struggling with attendance. Please don't hesitate to reach out if your family needs any additional support in getting your student(s) to school on time daily.
We are looking forward to having what is feeling like a rare five day week this week. Now let's just keep the snow at bay so that it actually happens.
What to Watch for This Week:
BEH Black History Month Spirit Week
This week is our annual Black History Month Spirit Week. Here are the themes for each day:
- Monday (2/3) - BEH Day - Proudly wear your BEH gear, extra credit to anyone that can find some old gear from family or friends that went to Boise, Eliot, or Humboldt in their earlier years.
- Tuesday (2/4) - Rep your HBCU Day - Either wear the colors of the HBCU for your grade level or wear HBCU gear from a college your family has a connection with.
- Wednesday (2/5) - ICON Day - Wear a piece of clothing or bring an item that shows your favorite African-American role model.
- Thursday (2/6) - Blackout Day - Wear black to show your solidarity and support.
- Friday (2/7) - Black History Month Colors Day - Wear red, yellow, green, and black.
Teachers reviewed the themes for the week and we had an assembly last week to discuss the meanings behind each of these themes. Here is the slide deck we used to help share more details about the week's themes.
Report Cards:
Report cards can be viewed on ParentVue and we will be sending hard copies home in folders this Tuesday, February 4th. Please make sure to review them and engage in conversation with your student(s) about how they did and what their goal could be for this quarter. Additionally, if you have questions, don't hesitate to reach out to the classroom teacher via email, Dojo, or Remind.
BPI Homework Support & Info Night:
Black Parent Initiative is hosting an event called "The Tea on Homework" this Tuesday, February 4th at BEH in room 226. This will be an informational meeting to provide parents/guardians information/ideas around how to best support your student(s) with their homework. There will be refreshments, tea, childcare, and prizes available. There are 30 spots available, so please RSVP with Kayla Kelly at 971-808-9043. Here is the flyer for the event.
BEH Poetry & Justice Night RESCHEDULED FOR THURSDAY MARCH 13TH:
Due to unforseen circumstances, this event has been moved to Thursday, March 13th @ 5pm in the BEH gym! BEH present's “JUSTICE: WHAT LOVE LOOKS LIKE” - We will have pizza and a creative, constructive and courageous night of community art, poetry and activism with special guest, MIC CRENSHAW! Questions? Contact Mr Todd @ tfadel@pps.net or text/call (503) 975-2523
Principal Connect & Family Friday:
This week Ms. Freeman will likely be joining families at 2:00 in the staff lounge to share what we are working on at BEH and answer any questions you may have, as Mr. Kaveh will likely be attending a meeting offsite.
This will be followed by an opportunity to join in some family fun in the gym following dismissal. Last week our PTA was able to host a Bingo game and provide prizes to those who attended. Come to the gym after picking up your student(s) to see what fun is going on before heading out to start your weekend.
Looking to the Weeks Ahead:
Student Council Fundraiser:
Our Student Council is coordinating their first fundraiser and it is happening right now. Stop by the office and you can order Valograms to be delivered to BEH students on Valentines Day (February 14th) from the student council. For as little as $1 you can have a personalized note, a sucker, and a pencil delivered to your student. Stop by the office and fill out a request form or look for them at some of our after school events, just remember to bring cash, as that is all they are able to accept for this fundraiser.
Student Clubs:
Our new Student Council would like to work on adding weekly clubs to BEH and are interested in learning skills such as a second language, sports, photography, yearbook, etc. If you or a family member have a specific skill and some consistent weekly time that you could help teach/run a club, please let me know what club you would be interested in facilitating and if there is a regular day that could work right after school. If you have ideas or other thoughts around this, please share it with us. We would love to support our students' interests and provide some additional enrichment for them to learn some new skills after school moving forward.
Free Tutoring Options:
The Multnomah County Library is offering free Tutoring and other resources to support students academically outside of the school Day. Click on the link below to find out more: https://multcolib.org/community/free-online-tutoring-resources-students
