Good Morning Memorial Families,
We are headed into month #2 of school and one of my most favorite months of the year. October brings the fall weather that I love, and there is still enough daylight to enjoy the afternoon soccer games and other fall activities. My oldest turns 18 this week and as we get ready to celebrate him in the midst of college visits, applications, essays, and “last times” as a K-12 public school student, I can’t help but remember how quickly the years do fly by and how impactful each of the educators that have worked with and helped him have been in developing skills that will carry him into his early twenties. It may seem as though high school and senior year are far away, but it truly does go by so fast and each year that your child is in school here in Mendon-Upton, all of us, including elementary educators, are working towards developing seniors who are ready to be successful in the world- no matter what path they take as a young adult.
Are you familiar with the MURSD Portrait of a Learner (PoL)? The PoL was developed several years ago and gives us a blueprint for developing our students’ competencies in multiple areas as they make their way through the Mendon-Upton Regional School District so that they are well-rounded young adults when they graduate.
At the elementary level, we have taken the six competencies and turned them into superheroes. Each superhero has special powers and over the past year we have begun to help our youngest learners start to recognize when they are employing each superpower into their work.
At our first All School Meeting of the year, our fourth graders shared how they used Inspired Innovator and Skillful Collaborator superpowers to solve complex STEM problems as teams in the first few weeks of school. Mrs. Fowler, our art teacher, has been teaching students how the six competencies are developed in art class by building them into her learning objectives for the past year. Throughout the year we will be continuing to embed learning opportunities that will develop and strengthen students’ skills in these six areas and highlighting it for them so they can see just how much they are growing and learning.
Have a wonderful week!
Warmly,
Wendy and Lauren
