Mustang News: Volume 1- Issue 3
Gunnison Middle School Families,
It was great to have the 8th graders back after another successful Taylor Challenge experience! We had a great week getting into our daily routines and schedules. The next few weeks are busy with athletics and other community events. Next Wednesday from 5:30-7:00pm is our "Get the Scoop" night for 6th graders and new students. This is a great opportunity for students that are new to GMS to get the "nuts and bolts" and what you need to know to support your student through the school year. As we get into the year, please reach out to teachers, counselors, and administration with any questions that are on you mind!
Make sure to scroll down for all of the details on community events and updates!
Take care,
Lance
Staff Spotlight
Mrs. Lamar
Hello and Hola, GMS family! I am Sara Lamar and count myself fortunate to get to work with our GMS students and staff members every day! I am the school counselor and student advocate at GMS, as well as the sponsor of the Sources of Strength program, co-sponsor of the WEB program, and girls basketball coach. I am entering my 16th year in education and my 15th year as a school counselor! I absolutely love my job and love my middle school family - I think we have the best middle school in the country! I am available to help and support all students, staff, and families, so please reach out if you ever need anything.
I moved to Colorado from Maine in 2005, and instantly felt at home in the Gunnison valley. I currently live in Pitkin with my family and our dog, and we love being so close to the mountains! You can usually find our family on some sort of outdoor adventure or playing cards or a board game around the dining room table. My other passions include baking, reading, running, telemark skiing, and traveling. Go, Mustangs!

GMS Mountain Bike Team
We are excited to announce the Gunnison Middle School Mountain Bike Team! This program will operate in cooperation, and with support, from the Gunnison High School Mountain Bike Team. Participants will be given an opportunity to build fitness and skills through trained and experienced youth mountain bike coaches. More importantly we will shape friendships, determination, and confidence on and off the bike. The primary focus of this team will always be FUN! Additionally, we will introduce healthy habits and training strategies which are beneficial to riders interested in transitioning to competing at the high school race level.
As a brand new program we do have to limit the size of our team to 12 riders due to coach availability. The program runs Monday through Wednesday at the following times: Monday and Tuesday - 4-6pm & Wednesday - 2-5pm. The first practice will be Wednesday, September 6, running Mon/Tues/Wed through October 12, 2023. Please email cowboymtb@gmail.com for more information.
New Cell Phone Policy
Students may use cell phones and personal earbuds/headphones before and after school only. During the school day, cell phones and personal earbuds/headphones should be stored in lockers or backpacks. If a student needs to communicate with parents/guardians during the school day, they should do so from the office.
