The Bear Bulletin
May 2024
A MESSAGE FROM MS. ROBERTSON
We are in the home stretch of our 2023-2024 school year. We have a busy month and a half left of school. Thank you to the PTA for hosting two amazing events in April- the 2nd Annual Staff vs. Parents 5th grade basketball fundraiser and the Science Fair. The staff came out victorious this year at the basketball game and we raised money to curb the cost of our end of the year 5th grade field trip. It was great to see our 2nd graders participating in the science fair this year. Thank you to all of our families and staff who helped host, plan, and facilitate these events.
This month we finish our MCAP testing for our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. Once again, we are raffling off testing incentives to our students to celebrate their attendance during testing. We will ALL celebrate the end of testing with extra recess at the end of the month. Monday, May 6th-Friday, May 10th is Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week! Please help show your love to our teachers and staff by sending them a kind note, email, or other token of appreciation. We are so lucky to have such a wonderful, committed staff here at Barnsley. Our 5th grade students will also go on their end of year field trip to on Tuesday, May 28th. Thank you for all of your support with our 5th grade fundraisers that made this event possible. Thursday, May 30th (Grades K-3) and Friday, May 31st (Grades 4-5) are FIELD DAY for our students. Please look for opportunities soon to volunteer for one of our favorite event of the year.
Do you have a 5th grader that is being promoted? Save the date for Monday, June 10th at 7:00 p.m. for this year's 5th grade promotion at Rockville HS. More information will be sent home soon to our 5th grade families.
We are actively preparing for next year! With the end of the current school year quickly approaching, thoughts turn to the placement of students in classes for the next school year. Please see the bulletin for more information and resources about these topics.
Looking forward to warmer weather and a great month ahead.
Sincerely,
Ms. Robertson

FY25 Curriculum Updates
Amplify Reading Curriculum
MCPS is excited to adopt Amplify CKLA PreK-5 and Amplify Boost Reading K-5 across English Language Arts classrooms for the 2024-2025 School Year. Please see more information in the attached letter below.
Enriched Literacy Curriculum
We are excited to share that Barnsley will be implementing the Enriched Literacy Curriculum (ELC) for both our 4th and 5th grade students next year. The ELC is designed for students in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) local school instructional program of studies that need advanced, rigorous instruction parallel to the learning experiences of students in the Centers for Enriched Studies. The program content is enriched, quick-paced, based on the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards and is designed to meet the unique needs of diverse learners. The program provides instructional opportunities with complex literary and informational texts, writing instruction based on developing the writer through the writing process and writing workshop, and establishes an instructional atmosphere that promotes critical and creative thinking.
Those students who are currently in our 4th grade ELC classes will continue with the 5th grade ELC curriculum next year. Incoming 4th grade students that are in the wait pool for the Center for Enriched Studies (CES) will automatically be recommended for ELC. The Office of Accelerated and Enriched Instruction (AEI) will also notate students that should be considered for ELC based on reading and writing measures such as report card grades, MAP-R scores, and reading level. We will be sending invitation letters to our fourth grade students in June for both the ELC curriculum and our 4/5 math curriculum.
