Orlando Science Middle High Celebrates Black History Month
Black History Month
Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of blacks in U.S. history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history.

Flag Retirement Ceremony
“When the United States flag becomes worn, torn, faded or badly soiled, it is time to replace it with a new flag, and the old flag should be "retired" with all the dignity and respect befitting our nation's flag. The traditional method of retirement is to incinerate the flag, but this does not mean that one should simply drop the entire flag (intact) into a fire.
A flag ceases to be a flag when it is cut into pieces. In addition, it is easier to completely incinerate the flag, if it is cut into smaller pieces. A flag should never be torn up like an old bed sheet. It should be carefully cut up with scissors. First, a flag should be cut in half vertically, taking care not to cut into the blue star field. Then cut the remaining two pieces in half horizontally. This results in four pieces of flag, with one containing just the blue star field. The reason we do not cut the blue star field is because it represents the union of the fifty states and we should never let the union become broken or divided.
After the flag dissection, a medium sized wood fire should be created. The flag remnants should then be burned. While burning, the fire should be tended until the flag is completely incinerated. Ashes from the fire should then be buried.”

"Club of the Week"
KEY CLUB
Key Club is a volunteering service club. We hold service and fundraising projects inside and outside of school; for instance, we help volunteered at food banks packaging foods for Hurricane Irma victims. We also held in school service projects such as posting positive messages on everyone's lockers. Besides service projects, our club also holds fundraising projects. In October, we sold BooGrams and all the proceeds went to Trick or Treat for UNICEF. Our club is always learning to improve. Our Key Club attends Divisional Council Meetings where we share other service and fundraising projects with other schools. Our club will also be attending Spring Zone Rally this February 17th. Our club is always open for new Key Club Members to join. Our meetings are held every Thursday during club time in Mrs. Gourdie's Room. #BeTheKey
