Breathe for Harmony
Harmony is a beautiful balance between mind, body and soul measured in tender peaceful moments. โ Melanie Koulouris
Ego says, โOnce everything falls into place, Iโll feel peace.โ
Spirit says, โFind your peace, and then everything will fall into place. โ Marianne Williamson
Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony. โ Mahatma Gandhi
Practice One: Bring the Beat
Purpose: Ignite creativity, collaboration, connection, and shared creation.
Materials Optional: instruments, real or makeshift (e.g., drumsticks, pencils, tambourine, triangle, maracas, whistle, beads in a jar).
1. Find a comfortable spot and arrange yourselves in a circle.
2. Now, I invite one of you to start us off by choosing a sound or beat you would like to make. It could be something like a rhythmic hand clap or drumming with pencils.
3. Great! The next person in the circle will add your own sound to complement the beat. You can choose to whistle, hum, or make any sound that blends well with what the previous student did.
4. As we continue around the circle, each of you will have the opportunity to add your unique contribution to the collaborative harmony. Feel free to tap on your chair or stomp your feet if thatโs what youโd like to do.
5. Letโs keep going, taking turns one at a time, until everyone has had a chance to add to the harmony. Remember, this is a co-creation, so weโre all working together to make something special.
6. Enjoy this activity and the sense of connection it brings as we create our own unique harmony!
Reflection Questions
How did it feel to contribute to harmony?
What sounds or beats caught your attention most?
Would you change your beat next time? Why/why not?
What were your takeaways from this experience?
Practice Two: Symphony and Settle
Purpose: Relax the body, calm the mind, foster well-being
Need: Symphonic music and speakers
1. Come into a comfortable position, either seated on the floor, a cushion, or a chair.
2. Gently lengthen your spine, with your head over your heart.
3. (Fade in soft, calming symphonic music)
4. Notice if youโre holding on to any tension, and as you exhale, send the breath there, allowing yourself to relax.
5. Do a couple of shoulder rolls or neck circles to release any lingering tension.
6. Allow your face to soften, as you release the clench of your jaw and smooth out any creases around your brow.
7. Allow the individual instruments in the orchestra to collaborate and help ease you into relaxation.
8. Breathe deeply, and if you havenโt already done so, let the eyelids begin to close.
9. (Begin to fade out the music until you reach silence.)
10. Continue to rest your eyes closed if it feels comfortable, and see if you can still feel the harmony within even though you cannot hear the harmonious sounds outside you.
11. Place both hands on your heart. Notice the sensations arising in your body, and how you feel after this relaxation practice.
12. Whenever youโre ready, slowly open your eyes if theyโre closed, take a little stretch, and gently come back from that experience.
13. I invite you to journal for a minute about the thoughts or sensations that arose during your practice.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
How did that practice make you feel?
Did you find classical music to be relaxing?
How might different music change your experience?
In what ways was this an experience of harmony?
When might it be a good time to practice this again?
